“District Cup Announces 7th Annual Polo Tournament to Take Place on the National Mall, June 15th”

From a press release:

“The TDC Foundation announced their 7th annual charity Polo tournament will be held on the National Mall on June 15th, 2024. The tournament has become a premiere Washington DC sporting, social, and cultural event—attracting thousands of guests from around the world, including young professionals, Diplomats, Members of Congress, C-Suite executives, and more.

Over the last six years, The District Cup has donated over $200,000 to local charities and generated millions of dollars for local business partners in the hospitality, catering, production, and transportation industries—including $1.5 million in revenue for minority and women-owned businesses.

“We are thrilled to announce our 7th annual District Cup Polo tournament will be held on June 15th on the National Mall,” said District Cup co-founders, Nico Baca and Dario Sotomayor. “Our event not only cultivates a deeper appreciation for the sport of Polo, but supports the greater Washington DC community through charity initiatives and economic development. This event is more than a match; it is a chance to witness elite athletes compete in the oldest team sport in the world, all while making a difference for our community.”

The theme of this year’s tournament is “Polo Passport,” allowing guests to enjoy culinary, cultural, and sporting experiences from different countries around the world. Guests will use their “Polo Passport” to travel to cultural exhibitions hosted by different countries that will offer culinary, cultural, and sporting experiences in the tented “Polo Pavilion”. The 2024 District Cup will feature a celebrity Polo match, followed by four teams comprised of elite athletes competing to take home the Cultural Polo Cup and the District Cup trophies.

The District Cup’s 501c3 non-profit organization, the TDC Foundation, is committed to supporting a variety of philanthropic causes. This year, The District Cup is honored to partner with The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp (THITWGC), an organization committed to helping children with serious illnesses and their family members. THITWGC provides programming in multiple area hospitals and is opening a Maryland location to support children in the greater DMV area and beyond in 2025.

“We are proud to once again be partnering with The District Cup for their annual Polo tournament”, said Jarrod Zwirko, Director of Community Fundraising for The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. “Partnering with organizations that make a positive impact on their local community is essential to our mission. As we continue our work in multiple hospitals in the area and open the doors on our Maryland camp next year, it’s a perfect opportunity to deepen our roots in the Washington DC area.”
About The District Cup: The game of Polo has been played on the National Mall since the early 1900s. Building off of this 100+ year tradition, The TDC Foundation is an organization that hosts an annual charity Polo tournament on the National Mall to raise money to support underserved youth from the greater Washington DC area. Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
