S. passes on the GoFundMe for “Community Support for Aresa and C’Mya from MV Calle 8”:

“On April 14th, in the middle of the night, two dear members of our community lost everything due to a tragic fire in their home. Aresa and her six-year-old daughter, C’Mya (from Mundo Verde Calle 8 first grade), just experienced a life-altering tragedy which they are still mourning and processing. It all happened so fast, and if it weren’t for the neighbor’s pounding on their door in the middle of the night, things could have been much worse. By the grace of God, the entire family is safe, however, the family only has what they were wearing that night. Their home is deemed a total loss, including the loss of C’mya’s pet cat – Benji. “Dear PoPville,

I’m writing to you as a friend of John Chambers and BLOOMBARS, his wonderful, family-friendly art space in Columbia Heights. Things have been rough on small arts organizations since Covid, and John is in immediate danger of losing not only Bloombars but his home, because he sunk everything into keeping his small non-profit art center alive.”

From Spotfund:

“Fifteen years ago, my friend John Chambers quit a great job to follow a dream. He turned an old building into a community art space in the up-and-coming Washington D.C. neighborhood of Columbia Heights. He called it BloomBars. The intention was never to serve alcohol but to serve art and build community. Over the years, singers, musicians and writers of all types came together to be nurtured as artists and human beings. Toddlers learned how to play drums there. Teenagers became poets there. Musicians stood on a stage for the first time there, and went on to celebrated careers. It’s the kind of family-friendly place that every parent wants in their neighborhood. With a social justice mission, no one was ever turned away for lack of funds. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping you can spread the word about the plight of Hellbender Brewing Co., a nearly decade old NE DC institution that’s trying to party its way out of a bad situation. With a little help from its friends, Hellbender is planning an event on Saturday to raise the funds it needs to buy a new boiler and get back to brewing.

As a longtime resident of the area, I don’t want to see Hellbender go the way of 3 Stars, a great neighborhood taphouse that went under just shy of its 10th birthday. Please help save our suds!” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

He has been taking care of my dog for years, and has always been so sweet and kind with him. Mike is the gentlest soul and I literally can’t stand to take my dog to anyone else. He’s such an important part of our dog community and everyone who knows Mike loves him. Levon’s dog groomer, Groomer Mike, is so beloved that there is often a 2-3 month wait to get appointments with him. It turns out he’s had some serious health issues and could use some help. I hope the DC dog community can rally”

From Mike’s GoFundMe:

“Our colleague and friend Mike, affectionately known as Groomer Mike, was hospitalized in early April with Pneumonia and is experiencing severe complications, that continue to affect his lungs and heart. (more…)

Niomi Russell

“Dear PoPville,

hoping you could share this Go Fund Me for Niomi Russell, the sweet 15 year old tragically killed this week, an unintended target of the senseless gun violence in our community. She was truly a bright light”

The GoFundMe says:

“Hi and thanks for reading.

We are deeply saddened and heartbroken to share the tragic passing of Niomi Russell. Not only was Niomi a beautiful person inside and out, Niomi was a cherished daughter, a loving sister, and a great friend. At the young age of 15, Niomi had her entire life ahead of her, however that was cut short when she was tragically murdered on Sunday, April 14th. (more…)

From GoFundMe:

“My brilliant and beautiful brother, Glenn Hill, died unexpectedly on Sunday, leaving behind his 18-month-old son Ezra and his wife Rachel, who is currently pregnant with their second child.

Our family is in shock and grappling to deal with this unfathomable loss, as are all who knew him. Our main focus right now is to surround Rachel, the love of his life, with support and care as she navigates raising Ezra and their new baby (another boy, due this summer) without Glenn. He was her rock, a steadfast and loving partner and an infinitely patient and capable father who delighted in his rascally, sweet-natured firstborn son and was eagerly anticipating meeting his second.

I know our grief is shared by the wider community, because to know Glenn at all was to love the guy. He was a beloved fixture of the DC nightlife scene for more than 25 years, a bright light in many a dimly-lit bar (Black Cat, Aroma, The Passenger, and Showtime, to name a few). (more…)

The GoFundMe says:

“Hello, I am Yeira Melara, a 21-year-old who recently experienced a life-changing event. On April 14th at 12:40 am, our house caught on fire. It was a terrifying moment as my two brothers and I smelled smoke coming from my room. We rushed to find flames already engulfing the area. In a panic, I tried to douse the fire with water, but it spread rapidly. Next thing I see the fire spreading to my bed the flames started to get bigger and bigger. In the panic I tired to find the fire extinguisher but I wasn’t able to locate it. I started panicking until my 17 year old brother told me “yeira it’s too late we have to go” I knew in that moment that I had no choice but to evacuate… (more…)
