“Officer Barry Eastman (on right) joined the Metropolitan Police Department (DC) in February 2013.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m sure you’re aware of the dc police officer who died in the fatal car crash in Maryland the other day. Officer Eastman was on his way home from just working the midnight tour when the accident occurred. Officer Eastman was made famous last year when he was playing a game of football in the snowstorm last year and he stiff armed a kid.

Member of the third district started a GoFundMe account for his two kids, who are twins and just turned 5. Can you please spread the word?”

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. That’s the idea behind La Poubelle (“The Trash” in French) — a gourmet, eight-course dinner prepared entirely from “recovered” food that otherwise would be headed to the dump. Restaurant-owner and chef Ashish Alfred and DC-resident Mattie Hanley are teaming up for the event to raise awareness about food waste. The dinner will be hosted at Duck Duck Goose in Bethesda on September 28 from 7:30-10:30 pm.

La Poubelle benefits KIND (Kids In Need Distributors), which delivers school lunches to underprivileged elementary school children. Guests donate $75 for the waste-free meal and 100% of proceeds go directly to feeding hungry children. The highly anticipated dinner has already sold out. (more…)

From Tail Up Goat’s Jill Tyler:

“We moved to St. Thomas in the summer of 1989. Just a few weeks after we arrived, Hurricane Hugo hit. Our roof peeled away from our home and we took shelter in a closet and held a mattress over our heads. I was in kindergarten.

It’s strange how you adapt, what becomes normal. We didn’t have power for months. Our roof was a blue FEMA tarp. To bathe, my parents dipped buckets on ropes into our cistern to pull up water, and we showered with cups and buckets. We used Coleman camping stoves to cook and Coleman camping lanterns for light after the sun set. We had a cooler that we kept perishable food in. My mom stood in lines outside of grocery stores to wait to get to shop from the picked-over shelves. This was life for months. (more…)

From an email:

Cantina Marina is hosting “Love for Love City,” a fundraiser for St. John, USVI, the hardest hit US territory by Hurricane Irma. On Wednesday Sept. 20, 10 percent of all sales and $2 of every Painkiller (the official cocktail of the Virgin Islands) sold will go to the St. John Community Foundation, a charity set up in the wake of Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

The promotion is valid all day (11:30 to 10 pm), but an informal group of “Friends of St. John,” who’ve found each other on Facebook in the aftermath of Irma, are gathering between 4 and 9 to cry, laugh, reminisce and rally hope and funds for the future of St John. All are welcome!

So grab your friends, family and coworkers for lunch, happy hour or dinner at a restaurant whose Painkillers (yes, they are topped freshly grated nutmeg!), fish tacos and dockside location will have you in a St. John state of mind. Together we are #StJohnStrong!

Parking and transportation information here: http://www.cantinamarina.com/location.html

NOTE: the restaurant is going on hiatus in October so don’t miss this chance to show your appreciation for Cantina Marina too!**”

“Dear PoPville,

Has anyone contacted you about clothing donations for Hurricane Harvey victims? I would love to donate some gently used clothing to the folks down in Texas but wasn’t quite sure who/where was accepting.”
