Brian Johnson via GoFundMe

The GoFundMe says:

“Brian was involved in a heartbreaking car accident on Easter Sunday in which he lost his life.He was a strong and caring brother with a big booming voice, loving partner to Myracle, and proud and dedicated father. The sudden loss has rocked his family to the core. He left behind his son and pregnant partner.

We are hoping that through the generosity of family and friends we can lessen the financial burden of this tragedy. A donation big or small will make a difference and also would be greatly appreciated.”

From MPD:

“Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic fatality resulting from a traffic crash that occurred on Sunday, April 4, 2021, at the intersection of 14th Street and C Street, Northeast. (more…)

Mohammad Anwar via GoFundMe

Thanks to all who passed on the GoFundMe for the family:

“Mohammad Anwar was a hard-working Pakistani immigrant who came to the United States to create a better life for him and his family. He was simply at work yesterday evening, providing for his family, when his life was tragically taken in an appalling act of violence. The details are still being investigated, however we know that Anwar was working on an UberEats delivery when two assailants attempted to carjack him in Navy Yard.

Anwar was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who always provided a smile when you needed one. He leaves behind a family, near and far, who cherish, love, and miss him dearly. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I unexpectedly received a bonus from work and I’d like to find a way to share the good fortune with my community. In particular, I’d like to donate a large portion of it to organizations that work on (1) homelessness issues in DC and (2) helping DC students access technology. Do folks have recommendations on organizations that work on these topics and could make good use of a contribution?”

Capital Checkers, 9th and S Street, NW

Ed. Note: I’ve been concerned this might happen here since 2015.

“Capital Checkers was founded in 1985 by a group of dedicated players looking to create a more formal community. As DC has evolved, so has the organization. But some things never change: our commitment to the community, our passion for the game, and our friendships with each other.”

From an email:

“After 40 years as a DC cultural institution, Capital Checkers will soon be forced to close its doors in Shaw. Long time renters at 815 S St NW, the landlord has decided to sell the property and the club must leave by the end of March! (more…)

Thanks to Sarah for passing on this GoFundMe:

“After losing his job at the Convention Center in March, Eliezer Albino began selling Puerto Rican food from catering pans on the street in Columbia Heights. His cooking has attracted praise on PoPville (“great empanadas and roast pork … [g]ive it a chance if you’re passing by!”), as well as The Washington Post (“his customers are regulars and passersby who can’t resist the smell”). With the money he made in the fall & early winter, Eliezer was able to stay afloat, and even ensure his 10-year-old son – who contracted COVID-19 last year – could have something resembling a normal Christmas holiday.

Two weeks ago, Eliezer stepped away from his gear, and when he returned, he found it thrown into a dumpster, bent out of shape, and almost entirely unsalvageable, destroying what was already his ‘plan b.’ (more…)
