Amini Family

“Dear PoPville,

For the past couple of weeks, however, I’ve started working with the Immigrant and Refugee Outreach Center (IROC)’s New Neighbor Program.

The wonderful family I’ve gotten to meet is the Amini family! A more complete story is below. The short version is they’ve dedicated their life to the dream of making democracy flourish in Afghanistan, and because of that have had to restart their lives in the US in the wake of the Taliban coming to power. They just moved into a small 1 bedroom in Alexandria, VA from one of the temporary camps in Greece a couple of weeks ago, and they could really use a car to both as they find work and manage healthcare visits for both their 18-month-old soon and soon to be born daughter. I’ve started a GoFundMe on their behalf, and would be so grateful if you are in a position to help get the word out. (more…)

“Dear Popville,

After years in prison, 222 activists detained by the Nicaraguan government have been released. They arrived at Dulles Airport earlier today (Thurs.) and are now in the DC area.

170 of these individuals do not have somewhere to go in the United States. Individuals in the DMV can support them by providing housing or transportation for as long as they are able to. If someone is willing to consider hosting one or more of them, please fill out this form.

A network of Nicaraguans, family, friends, and organizations are working together to support the pro democracy activists. This list will support their efforts. Someone from the united effort team, will reach out to you to give you more information. Many thanks for your support.”

Update:

“Thankfully, the US Government has granted the individuals who arrived on 2/9 from Nicaragua 2-year humanitarian parole, meaning they are immediately able to apply for work permits. If you or your organization can welcome one of the individuals, please fill out this form. Upon filling out the form, you will be contacted.

Please keep in mind that these individuals will need a soft place to land. They will need a place to stay as they work to find jobs and build their lives in the United States. The US Government will do its best to offer ongoing support for all individuals and organizations who step up to welcome our new neighbors.

If you have any questions regarding how to help the Nicaraguan political prisoners who arrived yesterday, in addition to filling out the form, please email [email protected]. Thank you for all of your support!”

Arnold via GoFundMe

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to spread the word about this GoFundMe set up for the super wonderful Arnold Robels, who recently suffered a medical emergency. Link is here, along with more info about his story.

If you had a drink at a dive bar in the city over the past 20 years, chances are he’s served you. Don’t know a nicer guy!”

Ed. Note: For those who know about other options for Turkey or Syria please leave info in comments.

Thanks to all who’ve written: “The Turkish Embassy on Mass Ave is accepting donations (clothes/over the counter meds) for the earthquake victims. I just dropped some off and it wasn’t busy, unfortunately. No signs up, just ring the buzzer and they will let you in.”

and “I read on the Turkish embassy IG page that they are collecting blankets, coats, formula, diapers, feminine products, etc for the earthquake victims and Turkish airlines is flying the goods overseas. The embassy address is 2525 Massachusetts Ave NW for anybody that can provide in kind donations!” (more…)
