There have been quite a few Indian options added to the D.C. dining scene over the last few years – Pappe, Spice 6, Karma Modern, Punjab Grill, Bharati, Duet, Bombay Street Food and more not to mention the old stalwarts like Rasika, Indique, Bombay Club, Jyoti and tons more – so where are your favorites?

Lest we get in to a debate over what a dive bar is, let’s just nip that in the bud and include all bars. Your favorite bar can be all fancy with leather stools with armrest that have outlets, bubble machines, and ice imported from the finest natural springs, if you like. Or it can be Dan’s Cafe. Or it can be someplace nicely in between: (more…)

Got a question on twitter:

“ISO good ramen in DC ? I know the Cherry Blossom pop-up on 7th is to have ramen & been to Haikan but know of anywhere else I can look into?”

And it sparked a heated debate so let’s settle it in two parts – best Ramen in D.C. and best in the burbs?

Some options mentioned were Daikaya, Toki, Maketto, Haikan, Bantam King, Chaplin’s, Oki, Reren, Ren’s Ramen, Saku Ramen, and others I can’t recall. So who are your favorites?

“Dear PoPville,

Love this series. Would be great to see one on liquor store prices. I grew up in CA with Bevmo and selling in grocery stores, so the price of any liquor was fairly set across most stores. Here it feels like the same bottle can range in price by $10+ across stores.”

So, I titled this post ‘2nd best liquor store‘ because the best liquor store in D.C. is a cool little spot called Calvert Woodley Fine Wines & Spirits.  It is not really little but is really the best, there is no debate. Also they have a La Cheeserie. And their staff is top notch – “We couldn’t be prouder that we have 10 employees — 1/5 of our staff — who have been with us for over 25 years.” And their prices are the best. They are the best. So it is written so it so by order of the Prince of Petworth, March 7th 2019.

OK now that we got that out of the way, where is the 2nd best liquor store in D.C.? Per the OP’s request – where are the best bargains besides Costco? What liquor stores are the best for selection? Best beer? Best wine?

With Peking Express transitioning to Jerk and with Lalibela moving it got me thinking about how long the Yum’s next door will last and where’s the best carryout Chinese in general. Feels like they used to be on every corner but now they are dwindling. So before they vanish completely where are the best one’s left? Also, where’s the best carryout period?

11th Street, NW between Park and Monroe next to the former KBC/Good Silver space

I’ll be interested to see the properties you come up with. The ones that jumped to my mind, besides the one in the photo above, were the former 4Ps in Cleveland Park and the former Romeo and Juliet (White Tiger) on Capitol Hill. So what are some other prime spaces that are currently vacant? Do you think they’re vacant because the price per square foot has just gotten too expensive or something else, like it’s tied up in the courts or something. I think I’ll add the Argonaut space on H Street, NE too. OK, what other properties are vacant that really shouldn’t be?

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if your readers have any recommendations for fun date night ideas in/around D.C.? My husband and I haven’t done anything new recently beyond trying different restaurants or bars, and I’m hoping the community could provide some fresh ideas with their favorite things to do with their SO in advance of Valentine’s Day next week. Pricing isn’t really an issue, although cheaper is always better.”

Here’s one that I’m just curious about because I think for the first time since I was maybe like 8 years old, I’m not planning on watching the Super Bowl this year and I wondering where others stand. For those who do plan on watching, will you be watching at your house/condo/apartment or at a bar or a super bowl party?

As one married to a fuloughed employee for me it’s gotta be the whole not knowing when it will end. Like figuring out how many paychecks we can miss and still get by. I know we’re luckier than many in that we have some savings to tap into but it is an awful feeling doing those longer term calculations. Like it can’t go into April can it? But now it feels like it can which is freaking me out. Anyway, I’m just curious how everyone else is doing. Fed or not, how has this shutdown hit you? How long do you think it will go on for? What will the ultimate compromise be? Here’s to hoping we see a resolution real soon!
