Thanks to this tip from a reader: “Hey POP – the side of 729 Quincy Street just collapsed – the whole side of the house is gone. (It was abandoned.) DC FD all over the place too!”

Just got better photos from the reader. Check out more after the jump. (more…)

This is one of those old fire alarm pull boxes that has been converted into a sculpture. I’ve seen many of these alarm boxes converted into paintings but this is the first sculpture I’ve seen. This one is located in Mt. Pleasant and apparently is showing some troops being taken to the old Mt. Pleasant Hospital. Really an amazing conversion, no? Check out another picture after the jump. It looks like a new construction on Newton St. near 14th got torched relatively recently. Anyone hear about this? I wonder if this is a ‘State of Grace’ style torching or an accident. Who’s got the scoop? On the brighter side it does look like it will be a pretty nice pad when renovated…

Apparently we’ve been passing some history on many of our walks to the metro. There is a plaque that says this firehouse used to house engine company 24 and was built in 1911. Back then the engines were pulled by horses but this station was the first one in DC to be fully motorized. Georgia Ave. represent.  Anyway, this firehouse moved in 1994.  I’m not really sure what it houses today.  See the plaque after the jump. (more…)

Would you not go insane or is it kind of like living near an airport and not noticing the airplanes flying overhead? I used live not too far from the Cleveland Park Firehouse and on more than one occasion I’d be on the phone in my apartment and the person on the other end would ask me if I was at a pay phone. Remember pay phones, I was so pissed when they went up to 35 cents…

Thanks to Laurie for alerting me and sending me the photo of this van that caught fire on New Hampshire and 7th. It happened today at 5:10pm but Laurie said she could still hear a fire truck at 5:30. I wonder how the van burst in to flames like that.

Looks like Petworth is getting in on the urgently needed fire hydrant maintenance issue that arose after the Georgetown library fire.

This is the brand new Seagrave 2006 recently put into commission by the DCFD. These guys have more Petworth Pride than anyone else I have spoken to by far. These are the unsung heroes who reply to call after call without getting recognized. In fact this vehicle was just returning from a call when I got to the station. They have a badass logo on the side captured in this photo. So thanks to Petworth’s Bravest who are always watching our back.
