I thought this comment from the Jerry’s Kids Firefighter fund raiser was worth noting:

“We were ORDERED out of service to collect money (I do not work at the station pictured.) There was a memo from the “Fire” chief put out stating what companies would be out off service to collect money, and at which metro stations they would be collecting. No one one riding a fire engine or fire truck was happy about this. We come to work to WORK. Volunteer firefighters have always done fill the boot, and while a lot of us volunteer elsewhere, we were being paid by your (and my) tax dollars to do this. There are no volunteers in DC, as it should be. Why weren’t the ambulances staffed by firemen ordered out of service to do this too? In years past, money was collected by asking DC FIREMEN to hand a guy in their firehouse money from their wallet for the MDA fundraiser. The new “Fire” chief is a worthless camera hog.”

I saw them this weekend outside the Target and this morning outside the metro. I think it’s great that they are raising money for this cause. I’m sure they are on their day off but is it a little weird to have city workers raising money for a private charity? Again, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for raising money for a good cause but I’ve never seen this before.

“Thanks for your concern and all the help from the posters. We have been staying with friends in Petworth since the fire and will be going to an insurance provided apartment tomorrow. We have given statements to the fire investigators and hopefully they will be able to determine the cause of the fire. I can only imagine what those without renters insurance are going through but the community has come together to help make things a bit easier. Unfortunately no phone calls have been returned/and no statement has been made from the management company/owners of the building (just goes to show you how concerned they are). We hope all the other residents are doing well. Thanks for the coverage, and thank you again to the community.

Love

From an email I received:

Victims of the fire at 3145 Mount Pleasant Street have been relocated to the Best Western Hotel on South Capital and I Streets SW through Saturday night. City officials and community workers are helping to find semi-permanent housing for the displaced tenants until the building is refurbished and they can move back in. We’ve been in close contact with Yasmin Romero at the tenant association and other workers orchestrating relief efforts. Below are the latest needs – Yasmin and the other tenants are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the community: (more…)

WTOP reports on the 5 Alarm fire. My thoughts and prayers are with the residents.

Updated: More info from resident: “i was living on the first floor, the fire started in the basement. i saw the fire started on some machinery, after i put a extinguisher on it, it kept re ignighting, by the time the fire engines showed up, the first basement was out of control.”

I hadn’t heard about this fire. Anyone know the story? I’m not sure when it happened probably at least a week or more ago.

Thanks to this tip from a reader: “Hey POP – the side of 729 Quincy Street just collapsed – the whole side of the house is gone. (It was abandoned.) DC FD all over the place too!”

Just got better photos from the reader. Check out more after the jump. (more…)

This is one of those old fire alarm pull boxes that has been converted into a sculpture. I’ve seen many of these alarm boxes converted into paintings but this is the first sculpture I’ve seen. This one is located in Mt. Pleasant and apparently is showing some troops being taken to the old Mt. Pleasant Hospital. Really an amazing conversion, no? Check out another picture after the jump. It looks like a new construction on Newton St. near 14th got torched relatively recently. Anyone hear about this? I wonder if this is a ‘State of Grace’ style torching or an accident. Who’s got the scoop? On the brighter side it does look like it will be a pretty nice pad when renovated…
