“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I have been Petworth residents for a few years now, and when we first purchased our house, we had public trash cans on our street. Over the last year or so, two cans have been removed and not replaced. I have tried twice, unsuccessfully, to get the cans replaced. The latest response from our commissioner was that “the city is moving away from having cans close by residential homes because residents tend to leave their trash there rather than in their own bins.”

Is this true across the district? And, more importantly, is there anything we can do? I hope the city can appreciate the irony of removing trash cans because they are being used.

Our street has had a noticeable increase of litter, and it’s also tough because I often walk my dogs, alone, late at night, and I appreciated being able to stay right on my block, where I know most of my neighbors and I felt safe – I could easily walk a block to toss out my dogs’ poop bags. But now, if we’re doing a late night bathroom break, I have to walk 3-4 blocks to the nearest garbage can.

I’d love to get more information on this (i.e., if this is happening across the district, if anyone has any points of contact with DPW, if anyone has any success stories on how they remedied the trash situation, etc.).”

“Dear PoPville,

My friend went out to happy hour at Penn Commons (700 6th St, NW) Friday night. At some point in the two hours she was there, we believe something was slipped into her drink. She blacked out after two beers and came-to outside on a sidewalk to strangers trying to help her, realizing she had recently thrown up but with no memory of actually puking. She managed to get home by 10 by somehow summoning a Lyft, as evidenced by her phone.

We’re grateful that nothing worse happened to her, but we’re scared that this may not be an isolated incident. Regardless of who slipped what into her drink, we want to share that this incident happened with the community so that other individuals can keep an eye out for themselves and/or others, whether at Penn Commons or another establishment.

A predator is clearly out there and unfortunately his or her bad behavior is placing people in danger.”

“Dear PoPville,

I came out of a meeting in Dupont to hop on my bike to my next meeting to find a Mobike on top of mine. I pulled it off and tried to go on my way but the back tire wasn’t moving because the Mobike had broken my back brake and smashed it into the tire to the point that it can’t move! Now I also can’t easily push my bike to a shop. Has anyone succeeded in getting Mobike assistance in repairing the bike or at least identifying the Mobike user who did the damage?”

“Dear PoPville,

We live in a rowhouse in Petworth and it appears our neighbor is renting out the alley space behind their house to one of the dockless bikeshare companies called Ofo. Every other day another batch of 7-8 bikes shows up on the small strip of land between their fence and the street. The bikes are occasionally blocking traffic in the alley and can make it difficult for other neighbors to park.

Is this legal? Can one rent out this space to a private company? If they don’t have a permit, would DCRA or DDOT be the enforcement agency in the District to deal with these bikes? Any advice your readers have would be helpful.”

“Dear PoPville,

My partner & I got married last year, received a small inheritance, own a condo, and one of us has student loans on income-based repayment. We’d like to get our taxes done by a professional this year to help us figure out how we should file (especially to minimize impact on the loans), and would rather pay someone than take the time and energy to figure it out ourselves. Who do you recommend to do your taxes? Approximately how much does it cost? And a perhaps separate-but-related question, do you have a financial planner you really like and recommend? Is it possible to have good financial advising and tax preparation in the same person, or will we have to find two different people for these roles?”

An old magazine contains a Metrorail system map. The Blue Line doesn’t even show proposed stations going out to Largo, the Green line is unfinished, and the Yellow doesn’t extend to Ft. Totten.
I’m not sure if this was an official map, but it’s worth noting that the District and MD/VA county lines are not shown, as they are in the current map.

“Dear PoPville,

I take the Green/Yellow lines from Gallery Place up to Petworth to come home from work everyday. And one question I’ve had for years is why there are so many trains whose last stop is Mount Vernon Square.

I’m sure there’s a reason — either the cars get stored there or they get turned around to go another direction or something. Maybe someone knows.

All I know is that it’s incredibly frustrating when there are multiple trains to amount Vernon Square in a row — which can leave you waiting up to 15 minutes for a train in the most extreme cases.

Anyone know why they stop at Mount Vernon Square?”

“Dear PoPville,

We are first time parents, expecting this summer, and currently looking into feasible daycare options for when we both return to work. We are on waiting lists for full-time infant care at Bright Horizons and KinderCare facilities, which fall in the $2300-$2500 per month range. While they seem standard for the metro area, the tuition estimates are comparable to our current rent and we both have flexible work schedules which will allow us to work from home one day per week. Any suggestions from other parents out there for finding part-time daycare or a part-time nanny in the downtown area? We would appreciate all the help we can get!”

“Dear PoPville,

L’Academie apparently abruptly shut its doors last month. I had a $100 gift certificate to take a class there – and found out when I went to the website yesterday to sign up for a class (well, had to read a Washington Post article, actually).

The phone number to the school is disconnected, and I have a feeling I might just be out $100…which frankly, really sucks, as I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time + could really use the money back post-holidays.

I wonder if any other readers are holding a gift certificate and know what to do, or if anyone else has encountered a similar issue with a place closing its doors?

From L’Academie’s Facebook:

“Patrice and I are utterly devastated by the closing of L’Academie de Cuisine. For 41 years, we have had the pleasure of meeting and working with so many talented teachers, students, and staff members. We know that L’Academie has become an important part of so many lives and has built such a strong reputation, and that is not because of us. It is due to the thousands of people (all of you) who walked into Bethesda or Gaithersburg over the past 41 years and shared your lives with us. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to say thank you to the two men who intervened and stood-up for me on my metro commute this morning [Tuesday]. We were on the first train car heading from Chinatown to Farragut North (red line) at around 8:40 and you stopped a very aggressive man from accosting me and yelling at me repeatedly that I was a “f**king b**ch who thinks I’m better than him”. I didn’t get the chance to properly say thank you – so if you are reading this just know you were both so kind and understanding! Thank you and I hope your commute was much less eventful afterwards.”
