“Dear PoPville,

My wife’s brother recently welcomed a delightful baby boy into the world. It’s difficult for my father-in-law to come down to DC to visit the little guy, though, as he prefers to sleep in a recliner because it’s better for his back, and it’s hard to impossible to find accommodations that feature a recliner. I’m wondering if the Popville hivemind has any leads on hotels, B&Bs (air or traditional), or other lodgings that offer recliners. The baby boy is in South Arlington and my wife and I are in Woodley Park, so the closer to either of those locations the better, but will consider anything in the relatively close-in DMV area. Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

I was at the WSC gym this morning on lower Connecticut (1211 Conn) between 9-10am. When I left, my bicycle was gone. It was locked up to an actual bike rack with a heavy-duty U lock. Here’s where it gets interesting– Both the guy at the gym desk and the manager of Buredo next door saw a DC truck (one of the utility trucks with a butane tank in the bed) pull up to the curb, a crew jump out, cut the lock with a torch and take it. All this happened within the time span of a minute. And they only took my bike; there were others they didn’t take. Again, locked up to an actual bike rack. The truck had DC insignia on the side and the crew were in high-vis vests. (more…)

Ed. Note: I think it’s just a shortcut to the construction site staging area on Piney Branch. Or is it something more nefarious?

“Dear PoPville,

Just moved to the bottom of the hill on 14th and Taylor. Been seeing TONS of men go in and out of the woods off of Piney Branch where Rock Creek, Taylor, Arkansas all converge.

Not sure what they’re doing, doesn’t ever seem sexual or violent. Hated to do this, but called the cops when I saw one (when he was solo) looking through my bathroom window from down below in the woods.

Just now, I saw three men coming out of the woods from the same spot in my back alley off of Shepard.

What is this? Drugs? Prostitution ring? Homelessness? Mental illness?”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in one of the new apartment buildings here in our city. Last weekend I took a short trip out of town to visit a friend in Charlottesville. I took several bags and a cooler down to our parking garage with me, packed up the car and got on the road.

When I reached my destination, I opened my trunk to discover I’d left one of the bags behind, a bag containing mostly clothes, but also a ziploc bag that contained 1/8 of an ounce of marijuana, a glass pipe and a lighter. I briefly panicked, but called our front desk to ask if they could check and see if the bag was still in our parking garage, where I had presumably left it (right next to where my car was parked). They quickly called me back and allayed my fears, letting me know that they’d found the bag and that it would be waiting at the front desk for me, and my wife picked it up when she got home from work later that evening.

When I returned home from my trip, I opened up the bag to find everything intact . . . except that the ziploc bag with the marijuana was missing. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

The potential areas where she would be most likely be seen are along Georgia Ave, Petworth, Brightwoood, Silver Spring, the area near Walter Reed campus or along the Red Line. Please call 911 if you see her.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was heading into DCUSA in Columbia Heights yesterday afternoon when I saw something that disturbed me. There’s always a crowd of people outside the entrance selling random things: fruit, art, toys, shoes, whatever.

This time, I saw a pair of glass tanks, one containing fish, the other turtles.

As you would expect there was a huge crowd around the tank, reaching in, touching the animals, arguing with the vendor, everything. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am interested in taking a self defense class with several of my female friends. I’m hoping the community can share places where we may be able to accomplish that for free or minimal fees and a few hours of our time.”

“Dear PoPville,

A confederate flag in a house for sale in DC? For $1.65 million?”

Ed. Note: That appears to be the State Flag of Georgia that was flown between 1956-2001:

“The Georgia state flag that was used from 1956 to 2001 featured a prominent Confederate battle flag and was designed by Southern Democrat John Sammons Bell, a World War II veteran and an attorney who was an outspoken supporter of segregation.”
