“Dear PoPville,

Looking for a place I can run stairs. Some of these High Schools have outdoor bleachers where i can run their stairs but I don’t know if they are open to the public and when or what time. Does anyone know of a good place where i can get some stair training in NW?”

“Dear PoPville,

There was a story about someone who metro police were looking for because he was sexually harassing people on the metro. I was very distressed to learn that he is an accounting professor at UDC. Students in his class still have yet to hear from the University about this issue. He was teaching accounting I class on Saturday at 9:30.

I am very concerned for many reasons, but mainly a registered sex offender was allowed to teach at the institution.

[ARLNow reported:

“Day is a registered sex offender, according to MTPD. He was previously accused of other sexual crimes on a Boston MBTA subway train in 2004 and a Metro train in Arlington in 2002, according to news reports.”]

At this point in history this is just unacceptable. Students are very worried about their safety and the plan for finishing the semester their grades.”

Ed. Note: An old article from 2012 after a previous arrest says: “He has taught at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins.”

To say folks were bummed about the One Medical CareFirst split would be a slight understatement. Folks were furious. Perhaps there is some light. A reader writes her benefits rep:

“Can you please confirm for me that One Medical WILL be in-network for CareFirst, and the date that will be effective?”

The replied:

“It’s my understanding, the contract with One Medical begins on January 1.”

And it’s official:

“Dear PoPville,

I’ll be hosting Thanksgiving for the first time this year. I’d love to have a fried turkey…and have someone else do the frying. Georgia Browns is already sold out for fried turkey pickups. What are your other suggestions?”

“Dear PoPville,

I am writing to you about the trash situation in the rear of 1118 H St NE (H&Pizza). It has gotten out of control recently with their dumpsters that are located in public space in violation of DCMR Title 24, Chapter 13 of the DC Municipal Regulations, in Section 1380. Section 1830 provides fines for DPW to enforce (which has not been done at this location for the years it has been ongoing, only on a couple occasions has enough interest been shown to cite them but not in recent time, although citing is not a permanent solution). This business is the only one in the area with their trash containers on public property which violates any number of the regs in 1830, trash spilling over, (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I could use a little help from my fellow Washingtonians. Today, I was trying to switch to a new cell phone provider and upgrade to a new fancier iPhone when I encountered a problem that I haven’t heard of before.

First of all, I selected Consumer Cellular based on recommendations from PoPville. Everything was going effortlessly..I was getting a plan that actually worked for my needs, saving loads of money, and the customer service was delightful. I had picked out a new iPhone that would cost me $50 down payment, and enrollment in a payment plan of $25/month for 22 months …and then I got the error message (see attachment above): (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m car free so don’t drive much, but recently rented a car for some errands. In the middle of a block on 11th street, I got into position to parallel park, checked my mirrors and noticed a bike and some traffic coming up behind me. As I waited for the traffic to pass (a pause of no more than 5 or 10 seconds), the biker became irate, cursed at me for being in the bike lane, and swung something (I couldn’t tell exactly what) into the side of the rental car, leaving a significant dent and scratch.

Because I don’t drive much, I’m trying to figure out if I made an etiquette or rules mistake. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I bought a house in late February that had to be renovated. I was unaware that bins could be obtained for free within 90 days of purchasing a property; I missed that boat as the renovation took 6 months. I ordered and paid for the bins 12 days before I moved in (the website says that delivery would take place within 5-7 business days of the order). I have been in the house since the beginning of October and still do not have bins that were ordered more than a month ago. Numerous calls and emails to DPW Dept of Solid Waste and still nothing. They state they are a little behind in delivery. The only actual delivery I have received was a certified letter from DPW with a fine for improper storage of solid waste. Any ideas on how to get them to deliver or whether or not I should fight the fine?”

“Dear PoPville,

I am well aware of the rights that renters have when it comes to issues like entitlement to heat. But is there any equivalent for condo owners?

I live in a small building (two floors, about 20 units), with a completely incompetent condo board. They have not turned the heat on for the year. This is an ongoing issue, for example, they decided to turn it off in the first few days of April last year.
The heat needs to be on. Even during this recent 60 degree day, I was working at home and only able to do so by using a space heater. I am worried about pets in the building, and the potential fire risks if everyone is using alternative heating sources. (more…)
