“Legal Limitations for Purchasing a Cell Phone in Installments?”

“Dear PoPville,

I could use a little help from my fellow Washingtonians. Today, I was trying to switch to a new cell phone provider and upgrade to a new fancier iPhone when I encountered a problem that I haven’t heard of before.

First of all, I selected Consumer Cellular based on recommendations from PoPville. Everything was going effortlessly..I was getting a plan that actually worked for my needs, saving loads of money, and the customer service was delightful. I had picked out a new iPhone that would cost me $50 down payment, and enrollment in a payment plan of $25/month for 22 months …and then I got the error message (see attachment above):

“due to legal limitations we cannot offer the EasyPay option to residents of Washington, DC”
What? What the what? I either pay the full price of the phone now or pick out a new more affordable phone. I don’t flipping want a flip phone! (well, actually I do think they’re kinda cute, but that’s beside the point) I am a US citizen gosh darnit. Why can’t I pay way to much money for a smarter-ish smartphone in 22 easy monthly payments??

Have you heard of this before? Did I miss something when I signed away my voting representation to be DC resident?”
