“Dear PoPville,

Within the last week, one of the support posts for my neighbor’s wood fence has failed, and the fence is now leaning in at that point, and, to my eye, preparing to do so in other points. Fortunately, it’s leaning into their yard, and typical wind directions mean that, if it falls completely, it will go “their” way, rather than mine. For information, they own and occupy the home.

The neighbors are not great about taking care of their outdoor space, but I had hope that something this serious would get their attention. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My daughter is a kindergartener at a DC public school. My husband and I went in to drop off snacks for the class, and the teacher asked if we could do her a favor. She said they don’t have enough toilet paper or paper towels. She said that they never have enough. (I guess this shouldn’t have surprised me since the last couple times my daughter needed to use the bathroom when I picked her up, there was no toilet paper to be found.) (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I recently purchased an old home in the city, and seemingly like everyone else, am interested in taking down a small wall section to create an open floor plan.

Any idea what kind of contractor can tell me if it’s weight bearing or any recommendations?

I’ve looked on yelp and other sites and haven’t found anyone that can do it for residential houses.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m (currently) riding the red-line metro during rush hour, sitting near a group of teenagers. The metro is fairly full- but one of the teenagers is using his vape pen on the train. I’m not sure if this is illegal, or just plain stupid- but what’s the etiquette around vaping in public spaces (especially enclosed ones)?

Thanks-
Your resident DC Asthmatic”

“Dear PoPville,

I came across a really interesting event Wednesday night in Adams Morgan. Basically a DC grey-market cannabis entrepreneur called for an open meeting in the community to discuss the new cannabis legalization proposal by Muriel Bowser. There were about 100 grey-market cannabis entrepreneurs in the house and they picked apart the bill and the overall consensus was that they thought the bill was bad for LOCAL DC entrepreneurs and favored big money and cronyism. “Dear PoPville,

I tried to hang out in our yard yesterday afternoon with our baby boy, because it was a gorgeous afternoon, but within 15 minutes, I had 8-10 bites on my legs, even after spraying up. So now I’m researching yard spraying services. We are trying to be environmentally conscious and not use the stuff that hurts pollinators, but I’m wondering how effective the organic/all-natural stuff really is. Can folks chime in on whether this is worth it, and what they’ve been quoted? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

The Parkside neighborhood had sidewalks installed in March 2017 and for some reason they used a different material on only two of the blocks — 2700 block of Roosevelt Pl, NE and 600 Block of Parkside between Foote St and Roosevelt. The material disintegrated in less than 6 months. At this point we are either walking on dirt or gravel and the gravel gets in our homes, cars, and lawns and is problematic for pets. Dozens of complaints were submitted over the course of a year and finally we got a response in October 2018. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

As you probably know, Columbia Road and Harvard Street, between Park Place/Warder Street and 16th Street, are three-lane roads. Most of the time, the two curb lanes are used for parallel parking and the center lane is for moving traffic, unless it is during rush hour, during which one of the curb lanes becomes open and parking in it is prohibited.

As much as that helps move traffic during rush hour, we have a big problem. Most of the length of the two streets do not have any lane markings. (more…)
