“Dear PoPville,

I just moved into a new house in parkview and one neighbor always rents a car to go smart car and just leaves it in the alley way blocking access to my garage. I have put notes on the car and still nothing. Don’t want to be an a-hole but it’s getting to be annoying. Any advice? Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hosting a co-ed baby shower for about 30 people at my home in Petworth in August, and we are looking for a reasonably priced caterer for the party. We’re looking for something nicer than Whole Foods sandwich trays but not as fancy as a full-blown catered meal with chef on site, servers, etc.

We’d ideally like someone to prepare the food items and drop them off on the day-of the event. I’d love to know if anyone in the PoPville community has any recommendations.”

“Dear PoPville,

This morning, a DC trash truck backed into our retaining wall while trying to make a sharp turn on our street on Quebec Place NW up in Columbia Heights/Petworth. They caused pretty serious damage as you can see from the pictures. The police came and we filed a report with the Dept of Public Works and the WPD but it seems cumbersome and the claim process seems like it’ll be dragged out for weeks/months. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m looking for a recommendation for a driving instructor / driving school with their own cars. I am an adult (like, an old) but having lived in cities my whole life, have never owned a car, and I haven’t driven regularly in about a decade. I do need to do some driving coming up in the fall and was hoping to do some refresher lessons with a professional instructor. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

We’re looking to have the windows in our 4 story condo building professionally cleaned. Does anyone have recommendations for companies they’ve had good experiences with that aren’t exorbitantly priced?”

“Dear PoPville,

I have a driving etiquette/rule question that I could use your readers’ input on. It’s about whether to block cars or block bikers while I wait to safely turn right.

I drive home from work by going north on 11th St. NW and turning right onto Harvard St. NW. Harvard is one-way going east in this location. The northbound side of 11th St. consists of one lane for traffic and one lane of parked cars, with a bike lane in between.

When I turn right from 11th to Harvard, I often have to wait for pedestrians who are crossing Harvard in the crosswalk. I also have to wait for bikers (who I see in my right side mirror coming up behind me going north on 11th) to pass me on my right so I don’t hit them when I make my right turn.

While I wait with my right turn signal on, I do not start my turn and wait in front of the crosswalk because, if I do, I block the path for bikers who are going straight. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

We’re expecting our first child in December.  I would love to get an update on the 2013 discussion of daycare in Petworth.  We’re in the SW part of Petworth, so we’re open to places in Columbia Heights and Mt. Pleasant (and frankly, anywhere within striking distance from the S bus lines down 16th Street).  What daycare centers would readers recommend?  And any recommendations for good general resources for new parents in the neighborhood?”
