“Dear PoPville,

We were longtime customers of wagtime with our rescue who had bad separation anxiety. Wagtime’s website now auto forwards to Dogtopia and there is no mention of wag 2 location. Did wagtime just sell, or go bankrupt or…? Curious if you can find more info. Our family and many other customers had prepaid packages with them too and have received no communication since they closed for the pandemic. If nothing else it would be helpful to know what happened.”

“Dear PoPville,

Last weekend our showers, etc backed up. The plumber was only able to clear the sewer line to the street by using a larger-than-usual snake. See the picture of the tree root that was pulled out. The tree is between the street and the public sidewalk. The tree root is under the public sidewalk. Is the city responsible for fixing this? If yes, who do I contact? What experiences have people had in this type of issue.”

Ed. Note: I am dealing with almost exactly the same issue and believe I need to contact DC Water. Has anyone else gone through this situation?

“It’s about 3 inches in diameter.”

“Dear PoPville,

We discovered what we think is a small sinkhole on our front lawn. Anyone have any experience in dealing with this on their property? My googling says that you should call your insurance company first, and that some policies might cover the cost of an assessment of the issue. Does anyone have any recommendations on companies/engineers that assess sinkholes?”

“Dear PoPville,

On Saturday August 1st, our roommate went into cardiac arrest while on a run near the intersection of 13th and Mass. Ave. NW. A woman in the area immediately began performing CPR and flagged down authorities. He is currently in the hospital and recovering because of this hero. His family and friends would like to express their gratitude to the individual who saved his life. If you know who this hero is, please contact (203)-308-3254 or [email protected]. Thank you and well wishes to all!” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I thought it would be useful to share this news with the community about research on the effectiveness of various types of masks, specifically how ineffective, and actually worse than no mask at all, a neck gaiter may be. Here is an article from the Post discussing the research:

“In a recently published study, the researchers unveiled a simple method to evaluate the effectiveness of various types of masks, analyzing more than a dozen different facial coverings ranging from hospital-grade N95 respirators to bandanas. Of the 14 masks and other coverings tested, the study found that some easily accessible cotton cloth masks are about as effective as standard surgical masks, while popular alternatives such as neck gaiters made of thin, stretchy material may be worse than not wearing a mask at all.

I know these are in common usage, especially with people exercising (including myself). I think people taking the effort to wear the neck gaiter in the first place are trying to be responsible, so kudos to that, but, as Bill Nye says, “…now you know”.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am wondering if you/your readers have any creative suggestions for safe, socially-distanced spaces to telework. I’m going insane in my little basement apartment. I’d love to go sit in a park or something similar, but of course there would be no Wifi there. I can’t be the only one facing this conundrum- has anyone else come up with a creative solution?”

“Dear PoPville,

Last year, before COVID was a huge deal in the US I booked a vacation to Taos, New Mexico for mid October of 2020. I booked the flight, hotel and rental car and have been hoping since March that things would settle down as the year went on.

Well…it’s August. Things haven’t improved and I’m wondering if I should cancel/reschedule my trip. Has anyone else gone through a similar situation? How helpful were the airlines?”

“Dear PoPville,

My quarantine wine supply is dwindling and I want to know the best option for replenishment. My last large order was when Dio was closing down (hopefully temporarily…..) and I’d like to support another local spot for my next order. Appreciate any help you can offer.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am supposed to be traveling very soon and yesterday started experiencing muscle soreness and other potential COVID symptoms. I want to get a test but there are so many reports of tests taking 2-3 weeks!!

I haven’t knowingly been exposed, but I want to keep my family, other people on the planes, etc safe and of course don’t want to travel if I am sick. I would just cancel, but it’s not a vacation/leisure trip. I really have to go unless I’m sure I have COVID.

What are people’s latest experiences with firehouse testing turn around times? (more…)
