14th and Rhode Island Ave, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what’s been going on at the Holiday Inn at 15th and Rhode Island NW? Without trying to sound hyperbolic there seems to be an ambulance at the hotel daily. Hard to imagine the hotel is full of tourists, so wondering if the city has converted it to house ill patients from the hospital or converted it into some public hotel/housing? THere also seems to be shuttle busses that come and go from the hotel. Any ideas?”

“Dear PoPville,

I just moved into a new house and have been enjoying furnishing the place myself because I love interior design as a personal hobby. But I wish I could ask an expert some questions/advice. I’m curious if the PoPville community knows of any interior designers who would be willing to accept one-off questions (e.g. should I paint this bench black, leave it as is, or stain it a lighter color?) vs. designing entire rooms. Obviously, I would be willing to pay by the question or by the hour!”

“Dear PoPville,

I recently bought a new used car and I’d like to get it plated and registered in DC. This requires a trip to the DMV from what I can tell and during COVID, you must make an appointment. The problem is, the appointment scheduler website never shows any appointments available. And yes, I’ve heard of the “trick” that at 3pm on Tuesdays they open up a bunch of slots. I have logged in every Tuesday at 3pm for the last 6 weeks and no dice.

So my question for the community is: has anyone successfully snagged an appointment at the DMV and if so, how? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My partner and I breezed through the first 8 months of the pandemic and had remarked on how well we were doing spending nearly all day every day together. However, in the last few months we’ve gotten less patient and more argumentative. We’re hoping the PoPville community will have some recommendations regarding successful experiences they have had with a couples therapist/counselor, especially those focused on recurring issues with communication.”

“Dear PoPville,

I had a question for the community about gas bills. We got our gas bill this month (for January) and it’s higher than anything I’ve ever received – $130.

We just moved into this house on the Hill last summer from a condo, and it’s about 150 years old, so I know it probably won’t keep heat as well as other new places, but just wanted to check to see if this is normal for a 1300sf house (2 stories). This seems high to me, though.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking my dog Daisy through Dupont Circle today (Tuesday, Feb 2nd) just before 11am in a failed attempt to meet Potomac Phil on this snowy Groundhog’s Day. While we were there, we saw a woman walking her adorable dog with the biggest, pointiest ears. All of a sudden, we heard a shriek, and a chorus of “DROP IT DROP IT!” Her dog got a rat. (more…)

Over the weekend a reader forwarded us a best fried chicken request and I realized our last thread was from 2011 and that simply will not do. It’s sad to see the recs of those no longer there (RIP Lawrence’s II et al.) Anyway, let’s refresh – where’s teh best fried chicken found these days?

“Dear PoPville,

I’m a group fitness instructor out of work due to the Mayor’s orders. I used my initial 6 months of unemployment when the pandemic began, and refiled for the extended weeks this past November, receiving confirmation my claim was reopened and approved. I have not received any benefits since then – going on 8 weeks now. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I had a missed connection last Saturday (January 22nd) on 14th Street. I was seated outside at Pearl Dive when a striking man walking by caught my eye. He was maybe 5’8″ – 5’10” and was wearing a gray fur-like coat. Most importantly, he was walking an adorable pug-like dog who was also wearing a fabulous furry coat. I have seen him around before, but have never been able to catch his name! I am a tall, athletic man in my 30’s with a French Bulldog. Would love to meet up for drinks with our pups!”

Ed. Note: If this is you, please email [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP. PoPville is not affiliated with either party, please proceed with any potential connection at your own risk using caution as you would any online encounter. For those curious about passed missed connections, some have been made and when possible I’ll try to update when/if more are made.
