Last week a reader asked if Anthropologie was still coming to Penn Quarter. Work is progressing nicely at the soon to be retail space in 950 F St, NW:

A press release yesterday from Douglass Development mentioned that the Penn Quarter store is slated for a September opening. They also announced a new location for Old Town Alexandria:

Douglas Development just announced that upscale retailer Anthropologie has signed a lease for 10,500 square feet in the newly-acquired Douglas Development property at 610-612 King Street in Old Town, Alexandria, VA. Anthropologie will move into the former Hallmark store by the end of this year.

The popular clothing and home-furnishings store is no stranger to Douglas Development. This signing marks the second deal between the two in less than a year. In October 2010, Jemal leased 10,662 square feet to the retailer at its 950 F Street, NW property in Downtown DC, which is slated to open this September.

West Elm’s Pop-Up Store opened Thursday in Georgetown at 3333 M Street NW.

A far cry from the hulking behemoth of organic bedding and chocolate-wood veneers that used to exist downtown, this is West Elm‘s littlest store and arguably their most charming one. As such, it carries a limited amount of furniture and focuses instead on their collection of textiles and accessories. You’ll find a lot of one-of-a-kind items here: hand-printed ethnic print pillows, vibrant throws made from recycled saris, and gleaming glass mosaic wall decor from India that’s traditionally used to panel elaborate buildings. There are also tons of soaps, candles, and little items that you’ll probably be happy you purchased on an impulse. I got a candle in my little gift bag that smells so good, even my husband approves: Paddywax’s “Library” scent.

Walking past the old Boundless Yoga space at 1522 U St, NW I noticed the door open and spoke briefly with a worker who said a new furniture store called Foundry would be opening up in the old lower level space of Boundless Yoga. A google search turns up a quote cited by Borderstan from a press release:

Freeman describes Foundry as “a furniture boutique offering vintage, antique, industrial, reclaimed and repurposed finds for the home.”

Sounds promising. I’ll def. return for photos when they open up.

“Dear PoPville,

A friend is thinking about opening a flower shop in DC, but we’re wondering how many people actually use a neighborhood florist anymore? I buy fresh flowers for my house every week, but can get great bouquets for $10-12.00 at the grocery store, farmer’s market or even street stands. Several friends have made their own wedding flowers with simple Ikea glass vases and cut flowers from Costco.

So the questions are – do you regularly buy flowers? Where? If you want to buy flowers for a special occasion, birthday, dinner party etc. would you go to a florist? If you’re at the office feeling bad about an argument with your spouse do you call a florist and send flowers or pick up something on the way home? Does your office still get regular flower arrangements for the reception desk or has this been cut to save money?

Does anyone regularly patronize an actual stand-alone neighborhood flower shop like Flowers on 14th or Little Shop of Flowers?”

Back in late March we learned that Robin’s Nest would be opening soon at 809 Florida Ave, NW. I stopped by last weekend and the space is now open. They are open Wed. – Fri. 1pm – 7pm; Sat. 11am – 6pm; and Sun. 1pm-4pm.

Some may recognize Robin and she used to show her stuff at Eastern Market for 12 years. In addition to her own wares, Robin’s Nest also features gently used clothing (photos after the jump.) Additionally on Sundays, Robin invites you to stop by and knit, crochet and/or do other crafts and just hang out. Craft classes will soon be offered at the end of June. Call 202-243-9505 to find out more and sign up.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

Back in Nov. ’10 we learned that Capitol Video Sales would be closing at nearby 514 8th Street, SE on Barracks Row to make room for a new latin tapas restaurant to be called Pacifico. At the time I wondered when the bell would toll for the Blockbuster located up the street at 400 8th Street SE? Well we now know – mid to late August according to Barracks Row Main Street.

The space is around 4700 square feet and when asked what folks would like to see in the space on the Barracks Row Main Street facebook page the most popular answer? Trader Joe’s!

Personally I think a gym would do really well there.

Who do you think would be the best fit? A grocery store? A gym? Other retail? Or do you think there is enough room for another restaurant on Barracks Row?
