Dear PoPville,

Some potential news about the former fro-yo place in the upstairs of Union Station by the Pret (which was speculated to become a Burger King Express). I saw some workers working on the space yesterday, and I asked them what was going to go there. They said that it would be a “Tropicana,” and that it would be temporary. This is a bit confusing to me— does this mean it will be a juice stand? (Are there freestanding Tropicana dispensaries?) Also, there are now a bunch of Tropicana ads in the Union Station Metro, so maybe the old fro-yo spot will just be ad space until something new comes in. Just thought I’d pass this news on!

2029 P Street, NW

Washingtonian has the scoop on the former Tasti D Lite retail space where we saw the “meatsicles coming soon” sign on P Street in Dupont. It’s gonna be Cool Disco Donuts. Washingtonian shares the details:

The old-school aesthetic is an homage to the Washington that Gordon grew up in, when go-go bands like Rare Essence ruled the game and graffiti artist Cool “Disco” Dan tagged every other surface in the city. The name of the business is a nod to the underground operator, though he has no official affiliation. Another local street artist, Juan Pineda, is behind the vibrant designs.

The shop is slated for a soft opening on Friday, February 1, from 4 to 8 PM

Regular hours start Friday, February 8 from 8am-8pm.

3320 Cady’s Alley

Full disclosure – I was given a press preview and a free pair of pants.

From a press release:

It was back in Jan. 2012 when we first met the folks behind Gordy’s Pickles. They’ve since been tearing it up, most recently scoring a win for their Sweet Chips with a 2013 Good Food Award. They were the only winners representing DC.

Though there were two other local winners from Virgina:

EcoFriendly Foods, Iberico Americana Long Leg Ham 20 Month, Virginia
Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, Roundstone Rye, Virginia

Nicely done!

A little background on the awards:

For a long time, certifications for responsible food production and awards for superior taste have remained distinct—one honors social and environmental responsibility, while the other celebrates flavor. The Good Food Awards recognize that truly good food—the kind that brings people together and builds strong, healthy communities—contains all of these ingredients. We take a comprehensive view, honoring people who make food that is delicious, respectful of the environment, and connected to communities and cultural traditions.

The Good Food Awards were created through a collaboration of food producers, farmers, food journalists and independent grocers organized by Seedling Projects. This team has nominated judges from across the country to select the 99 winners honored in a special ceremony hosted by Alice Waters in San Francisco on the evening of January 18, 2013. To showcase the winners among the broader food-loving public, there will be a vibrant Good Food Marketplace on January 19, 2013. Visitors to the marketplace can taste, buy and meet the producers behind theses award-winning foods, surrounded by the spectacular Saturday Farmers’ Market at San Francisco’s iconic Ferry Building.

15th and Pennsylvania Ave, SE

Speaking of liquor stores, a reader gives props to World Wine and Spirits:

My corner, at 15th and Penn S.E., is undergoing a fair amount of change, and the longtime liquor store on the corner there, World Liquor, is renovating and re-making itself … with hopes of becoming a destination for craft beers, etc. The bulletproof glass is down. The store is renovated inside and is now going by “World Wine and Spirits.” Richard Lee, the owner, has reached out to neighbors, asking for their recommendation on what he should stock, etc. I believe he also plans to do tastings.

I was personally pleased to walk in there today and see a beer from my hometown, Kansas City … Boulevard, which I didn’t think was available on the East Coast. Richard is also now carrying Lagunitas, Great Lakes, etc.

I stopped by as well and the place looks great. They even have a good Sake selection.

More photos after the jump. (more…)
