3001 Sherman Ave, NW

Thanks to A. for sending:

“The beloved Stop & Go Market on the Corner of Columbia Rd. and Sherman Ave. is no more! After 20 years, the owner has decided to retire and sell the building. Real estate agent said something about a Capoeira Studio / Brazilian Café taking it over.

As an interesting aside, Shorpy has pics of this same building from 1921.” (more…)

Ed. Note: Wait, are those palm trees? What are those?

Thanks to John for sending:

“I’ve always told myself I should live where palm trees grow. West End is getting tropical and it’s not just the humidity. Also that Streets Market in the background is supposed to be opening soon.”

Ed. Note: Wait, I didn’t even know a Street Market was coming here?!? Stay tuned for another one coming to Adams Morgan too.

1414-1418 U Street, NW

On April 5th we asked What’s going on with District Distilling? on U Street.

District Distilling Company sends via email last night:

“After 3 years in DC’s U Street Corridor at the corner of 14th & U, District Distilling Co. is relocating. While we transition to a new location, our products will continue to be found at your nearest restaurant, bar and liquor store. Please follow us on social media for future updates and announcements.”

They also note: “We are releasing 3 new whiskeys this summer AND more releases to be announced by the year end!!”

Thanks to Stuart for first alerting us last night: “After 18 months, the Mt. Vernon Square Carnegie Library renovation is finishing. The Apple Store logo went up tonight.”

From Apple this morning:

“Today Apple announced the grand opening of Apple Carnegie Library on Saturday, May 11 at 10 am, alongside the new DC History Center.

To celebrate the opening Apple also announced a six week StoryMaker Festival with 40 local DC creatives from May 18 – June 29. The festival includes a performance during kickoff weekend from DC rapper GoldLink and wraps up with a block party celebration with No Kings Collective.” (more…)

Dan reports:

“I went to Panino Gourmet Sunday and all of the pumps/fill-up areas at the Valero were ripped out of the ground and were gone; some temporary fencing was erected where they had been. Fearing for the future of Panino I asked if they knew what was going on and they conveyed the message that the building would probably be torn down soon and with it Panino. Sad news that I hope somehow isn’t true.” (more…)

2300 Washington Place, NE

“Dear PoPville,

I live near the Rhode Island Metro and have been excited to see the ongoing development of some parts of Edgewood/Brookland/Brentwood while at the same time retaining some of the original neighborhood feel. As the Rhode Island stop has developed, there have been some noticeable absences – to me – in my year plus of living here. This includes a nicer wine store that comes without the security-intensive wine store. Don’t get me wrong, Wardman Wines in Brookland proper is great but is walkable on weekends only. So I’ve been watching with delight as a wine/liquor store developed in the RI live/work area by the station.

Yesterday I noticed people inside the new Exotic Wine and Liquors store. Went inside and was able to view and buy though official launch appears to be this weekend.” (more…)
