14th and V Street, NW

After great anticipation and a long time coming the Diego Tex-Mex restaurant recently opened up at 14th and V St, NW (the former AM PM Carryout space) on July 18th. On Thursday night Aug. 1st I got emails and tweets saying they had already closed. One reader wrote:

“Just passed by and it looks closed–for good–already. Know what happened? Or is it just for the day?”

Another reader tweeted the same night:

“Diego on 14th & V closed? Sign says to stay tuned for grand opening. Some staff outside apparently didn’t get the memo”

CityPaper reports that they closed because the owner was “not happy with the service and the food”. Apparently they’ve already hired a new chef. Stay tuned for a new “grand opening in the coming weeks”:

Chupacabra recently opened up at 9th and H St, NE. A twitter follower lamented that they were sad they couldn’t get a margarita. Well that’s about to change – a liquor license application says:

Hours of service hope to be Sunday through Thursday: 8am-2am and Friday and Saturday:8am-3am.

Carving Room opened up in Mt. Vernon Square back in February. They’re website says:

“A neighborhood kitchen specializing in house cured and hand carved meats, homemade sides and pickled vegetables. Full bar features 10 draft beers and signature libations.”

You can see their menu here. (Drink menu here and brunch menu here.)

How’s the pastrami? Any must order sandwiches?

Yesterday Izakaya Seki started their 1 year anniversary celebration with a 100 pound tuna $15 all you can eat. An update from last night:

“we sold out ヽ(゚Д゚)ノ
but we’re getting an even bigger fish in tomorrow.
so, yay! (ノ^o^)ノ”

1209 – 1213 10th Street, NW (actually in Blagden Alley)

Major development coming to Blagden Alley. A liquor license posted out front (on the awesome mosaic) says The American is coming:

Classic American Bistro with 70 seats with recorded music and Summer Garden with 75 seats. Total occupancy load of 175.”

The CityPaper reported that is from none other than Xavier Cervera:

Longtime Capitol Hill restaurateur Xavier Cervera sold his nine restaurants, which included Hawk ‘n’ Dove, The Chesapeake Room, and Molly Malone’s, earlier this year. Now, he’s establishing roots in Shaw with a new American bistro.

More details when they become available.

Unfortunately this could be bad news for local boxers as this space is currently home to the Downtown Boxing Club. Though the manager doesn’t anticipate needing to close in the near future as the process to open up a new restaurant should take “a few months at least.” If they do end up closing they hope to move to a new space nearby. Updates on that front when/if they happen.

Hard to believe it’s already been a year – congrats to the whole Izakaya Seki team! An awesome addition to the neighborhood. From their facebook page:

“HEEEEYYYY! We will be celebrating our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY by butchering a 100 lb yellowfin tuna for everyone at 5PM on JULY 31 — you can come watch my dad take this beast DOWN.

AND THEN YOU CAN EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT…(for $15/person). So I hope you’ll come celebrate with us ♥”

Via email Cizuka Seki tells me “we’ll be offering this 100 lb tuna from the 31st until the 2nd (or until we run out).”

I have the feeling they are going to run out…

Update – they started the butchering tuna early – check out a small video here.

Thanks to @VirginiaHouston for the tweet. Bistro Le Zinc, formerly the Sushi Sushi space, opened up back in 2011. A call to Le Zinc goes to voicemail that says they closed July 18th and it was their pleasure serving you these past two years. Stay tuned to see who takes the space.
