Steakhouse explosion of ’14 continues today with Mastro’s Steakhouse.

@ranpuba tweets us:

“Hey @PoPville, info on this replacement for M&S Grill?”

Back in March we learned that Mastro’s Steakhouse would be taking over the former M&S Grill space which closed in June 2013.

Mastro’s website says:

“Mastro’s collection of sophisticated, classic Steakhouses and Ocean Club Seafood locations are recognized for their combination of world-class service, highly acclaimed cuisine, and live entertainment in an elegant yet energetic atmosphere. A truly unparalleled dining experience…”

You can see their Chicago menu here.

Ed. Note: Yesterday we learned that Claudia’s Steakhouse was coming to the former American Express space at 15th and K St, NW.

“Dear PoPville,

Do you have any news on Hilltop Bar on Sherman Ave.? I haven’t seen any movement and a bunch of us here in the neighborhood were pretty excited about this new bar. Is it dead? I hope not.”

I am happy to report that the Hilltop Bar and Restaurant is alive and well! There have been some permitting delays but lots of progress has been made. They are now about to start work on a huge kitchen to be located in the basement which will take about 2 months to complete. After that they will likely have a zoning hearing in September and if all goes well they hope to open sometime in October.  A peek inside to prove the progress:

Also standby for a sidewalk cafe too:

From an email:

“Just wanted to send over a quick note to let you know what Pearl Dive Oyster Palace will be offering during the MidCity Dog Days of Summer, coming up on Saturday and Sunday, August 2nd and 3rd. Pearl Dive will be doing a special sidewalk pop up on the restaurant’s patio both days, featuring fried peach pies with vanilla ice cream for $5 by pastry chef Carri-Anne Hamer, in addition to $1 shucked oysters.”

More exciting new for Barracks Row – 705 8th St, SE had this exciting sign on the front door of the former Hello Cupcake space which closed back in March:

I spoke to a worker on site who said it will be a second retail spot for The Sweet Lobby whose first spot is up the block at 404 8th Street, SE. He said this space will be a different concept and should open in mid-September or early October. Updates as they get closer.

And in other sweet Barracks Row news, last week we learned District Doughnut was real close to opening – it sure looks it:

Back in October 2013 we learned we’d have to find a new spot to purchase our travelers checks since the American Express store closed. We also noted it was a pretty prime location. The steakhouse explosion of ’14 continues with word of Claudia’s Steakhouse taking over this space. A liquor license placard posted out front says:

“New full service upper tier restaurant serving Latin infusion cuisine in a steakhouse environment. Entertainment to include live band performances and dancing during evening hours. Seating is for 300 patrons. Sidewalk café seating 45 patrons.”

It’s located on 15th Street between the Cosi and the new G Street Food. Updates as construction progresses.
