Back in June 2014 we heard that Seasonal Pantry would be closing on 9th Street in Shaw and moving to Little Washington, VA. Not any more. Update from their facebook page:

“Seasonal Pantry is not moving to Washington VA. We are Staying in DC for now. We are looking to close our doors for a new location within the next year.
Thank you for all your support.”

From Bar Pilar:

“We’re old, but we definitely still know how to party! Bar Pilar, the lauded neighborhood restaurant and watering hole, is marking a decade of service at 1833 14th Street NW with a week-long celebration of throwback drinks, favorite dishes and guest bartenders starting on Tuesday, March 17th ending in a 10th Anniversary Party upstairs at the restaurant on Sunday, March 22nd.

“Over the past decade, we have seen 14th Street boom around us, worked with a motley crew of talented individuals who have helped shape the DC dining scene, and have had the privilege of serving countless guests who have passed through our doors,” says general manager Matt Brown. “There’s a lot to celebrate & we look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces at Pilar over the course of the week.”

On Monday – for one night only – Chef Jesse Miller will feature Pilar’s Prime Rib dinner, including a slab of prime rib, creamed spinach, foie gras whipped potatoes and glace. Other popular past menu items will be offered in addition to the regular menu throughout the week, including the Malt Aioli Potatoes, Grilled Calamari with Tomato & Basil, Tuna Niçoise, and the Bacon Buddy. Bar Manager Ben Wiley is also planning a special drink menu for the week featuring classic Bar Pilar signatures, like The Dark Side, The Ruffled Shirt, and The Bees & the Beer, with a few guest bartenders making special appearances behind the bar on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday nights.

To cap off the celebration, Bar Pilar invites everyone to its 10th Anniversary Party on Sunday, March 22nd upstairs at the restaurant starting at 7pm. The evening will include complimentary light bites, DJs and signature cocktails from the past decade (cash bar – all cocktails $10).”

From Straw Stick & Brick Delicatessen (formerly three little pigs):

“Tomorrow [Today] will be our 3rd year anniversary! Three years is a big deal! It’s a big deal because ninety percent of food service businesses close their doors before reaching that benchmark – only one in ten make it! We couldn’t be more grateful and appreciative to each and every person that has helped us make it through. We certainly didn’t do it on our own strength alone! We hope that you know that we really are thankful for all you have offered us; from shopping with us, sharing our food with your friends and family, offering encouragement, suggestions, and advice.

We can’t tell you how many people have told us they didn’t think that our business could survive in these early development stages happening in our neighborhood. In almost all cases, their intentions were good – people definitely wanted to see us thrive, but many were unsure if the timing was right for a business like ours. We knew we had our work cut out for us, but loyal customers and steady press let us know we were on to something great.

If you haven’t been by the shop lately, come by and see us again. If you have been coming regularly you probably already know about our growing pantry, bigger and better lunch menu, workshops on everything from butchery to salumi, and the renovations on our second floor. This is our year to strengthen and improve our work to give you a better and better experience. We couldn’t be more excited to have you on this journey with us.

So… how about some fun? Friday through Sunday we will have some awesome stuff going on! We have 25% off all smoked sausages, workshop giveaways, and a ton of meat boards so you can sample some of our favorite cured meats! Stop by, say hello, and join us in celebrating this awesome milestone!”

Last week I shared some scuttlebutt at that a mezcal bar was coming to The Colonel in Shaw. I still hear it’s coming and will have a strong Mexican restaurant menu as well. But nevermind that – because what was confirmed yesterday is epic. Washington City Paper reported:

“The Red Hen owners Michael Friedman, Michael O’Malley, and Sebastian Zutant are teaming up with Boundary Stone owners Gareth Croke and Colin McDonough to open an Italian-American restaurant focused around pizza. The place will be called All Purpose and open at 1250 9th St. NW late this year.”

Also reported yesterday by the Washington Post:

“Tiffany MacIsaac is settling down in Shaw. The former executive pastry chef at Neighborhood Restaurant Group has signed a lease to open a storefront for her Buttercream Bakeshop at 1250 Ninth St. NW.”

All I can say is – epic. Updates as both (and I haven’t given up on the Mexican/mezcal spot either) get closer to opening. Freaking epic!

Back in April 2014 we first heard that RPM Italian Restaurant, from celebrity couple Giuliana and Bill Rancic, would be coming to the former NPR building at 7th and Mass Ave NW. But we hadn’t heard any updates since. Now a tipster sends word that not only is RPM Italian still coming but will be joined by a Kapnos (Market?) as well as a SoulCycle. Updates when/if more info becomes available.

From an email:

“Ripe, a celebration of all things cheese, will be held on Sunday, March 22, 1pm to 3pm. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and taste with local cheesemakers, importers and cheesemongers. Cheese will be available to sample in all forms – straight-up, a fondue station, a Raclette station and passed cheesy bites. Beer samples and a beer pairing table will help guide guests to the perfect beer & cheese pairing. We are also very excited to introduce the first-ever cheese washed in Right Proper Beer. The beer was hand delivered to Crown Finish Caves in Brooklyn last month and the beer washed cheese will be brought back down for the event and will be available exclusively at Right Proper.

A full website on the event is here, which includes the link to purchase tickets (which are only $25).”

Been getting tons of emails asking about who’s coming into the former Mother Virginia’s space (2nd location) – finally an answer – Castello Restaurant and Lounge:

“Restaurant serving International and American cuisine. Entertainment to include a DJ and a live jazz band. Sidewalk Café with seating for 46 patrons and a total occupancy load of 159.”

Updates when they get closer to opening.
