From a press release:

“Page, a new eatery developed with The District’s own Chef Carla Hall opened at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport’s Terminal A. Hall, best known for her vibrant personality on Bravo’s ‘Top Chef’ and ABC’s ‘The Chew,’ partnered with airport hospitality group OTG to bring local flair and fare to the comfort food menu.

The 110-seat restaurant serves up an assortment of locally inspired favorites, including a Pimento Cheese Dip, Cured Ham and Biscuits, Virginia She Crab Soup, Chesapeake Oysters, Vegetarian Quinoa Burger, Lobster Roll and BBQ Cobb Salad.

“As a proud resident of D.C. and a frequent business traveler at DCA it is so exciting for me to be a part of this project. Whether you are making a flight connection, or spending time in the city, you have the opportunity to taste local food right at the airport,” said Carla Hall. “There are so many amazing culinary influencers with D.C. roots it’s fabulous that diversity and a celebration of local fare is making its way to our airport. I love the people here, I love cooking here, I love calling this home.”

Conveniently located in the center of the boarding gates, travelers can pull up to this new outpost, charge up their devices thanks to outlets at each seat, and order food from a visual menu off an iPad. The iPads also enable travelers to check the status of their flight, complimentary browse the web, or enjoy a number of pre-loaded apps. The 75-plus tablets situated throughout the restaurant seamlessly integrate into the guest experience, operating off of OTG’s award-winning software platform floTM.

The design of Page brings a bold and modern update to the iconic terminal, while preserving its historic and unique architecture. OTG’s partners in this venture Pleasant News and Baldi Management Group (BMG) will soon add to the eclectic dining options in Terminal A. Pleasant News will operate Custom Burger, Tagliare and Boars Head Deli and Baldi Management will operate Dunkin Donuts.

The opening of Page is part of a larger initiative to transform Terminal A. In the coming months, OTG in conjunction with The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Marketplace Development will continue to introduce new dining and retail offerings.”

The opening menu is categorized by “raw and cured,” “vegetables,” “pasta,” “fish and seafood,” “fire-roasted meats” and “dessert.” Weland’s signature style of rustic yet sophisticated cooking is reflective in many dishes like a seasonal tomato gazpacho with mustard ice cream and a burrata appetizer with grilled peaches and dandelion. Handmade pastas, roasted meats and fish round out the entrees with selections such as nettle and ricotta ravioli with chantrelles and fine herbs, Long Island duck breast with lavender, fennel and peaches and wild striped bass with champ potatoes, poached eggs, lemon and capers. Weland will work closely with Mike Protas of Boyd, Md.’s One Acre Farm, popular on Capitol Hill for his weekly CSA, to directly source custom-grown produce for the neighborhood restaurant. (more…)

From a press release:

“Celebrated Virginia-based Chef and Restaurateur Tim Ma of Tim Ma Restaurant Group – Water & Wall, Gather + Feast, Chase the Submarine (Coming Soon/ Vienna, VA – September 2015), and formerly of Maple Ave Restaurant – has officially announced his plans to open his first restaurant in Washington DC – ‘Freehand’ – as early as November 2015. The upscale casual restaurant featuring a home-like setting will be based in the rapidly evolving neighborhood of Shaw in the new mixed-use commercial and residential space The Shay in addition to numerous other notable retail and hospitality brands.

imrs.php

Located at 1934 8th Street NW, Washington DC 20001 in The Shay, a 268-unit apartment building from the JBG Companies, Freehand will open to the public as a French and Asian Bistro with the hopes of serving as an extension of Ma and Hernandez’s home. Seating at Freehand will be limited to 50 with the goal in mind of being able offer guests a more personable and intimate dining experience – with a high focus on service, ambiance, and the creativity of constantly shifting menu items.

With the space designed by award-winning Griz Dwight of GrizForm Design Architects, the 2700 square foot space will debut tones touched with rich smoky blues, warm woods, gold metallic accents, an open kitchen, and a communal table where Chef Ma may entertain revamped Chef’s Table/Tasting Table experiences for up to 8-12 guests at a time, similar to his Gather + Feast experiences. Freehand will feature custom ceramic plateware exclusively created for the DC-based restaurant by talented artists Amber Kendrick and Ernie Niblack of VA-based Cloude Terre.

There will also be a bar component at Freehand, separate from the restaurant that will have its own identity as a boundary pushing bar, but also serve as a unique complement to the restaurant. A simplified menu will be offered at the bar, and the full cocktail, wine and beer program from the bar will be available to the restaurant.

Celebrated since 2009 following the opening of Maple Ave Restaurant and along with wife and partner Joey Hernandez, Ma has continued to evolve his hospitality brand by opening additional Northern Virginia-based restaurants and culinary projects including Water & Wall in Arlington, VA, Gather + Feast – an intimate and private Chef’s Table experience hosted by Chef Tim Ma and Fable Hospitality’s Neal Wavra in guests’ homes – and coming soon to Vienna, VA as early as September 2015, Chase the Submarine, a casual and eclectic sandwich shop and butcher shop combination in partnership with Michael Amouri, will specialize in offering guests creative sandwiches, and a complete butcher shop. Freehand will serve as Ma’s first restaurant to open in Washington DC. Ma and Hernandez no longer operate Maple Ave Restaurant.

1330 U Street, NW

From a press release:

“Summertime on the east coast often evokes memories of Maryland blue crab feasts, lobster boils on the beach and gatherings with friends and family. Celebrating the most delicious of summer’s bounty, The Fainting Goat on U Street is launching “Picnics at the Goat” on Monday evenings, a series of monthly-rotating, casual family-style suppers focused around different iconic summer foods. The series kicks off tonight, July 20, with a juicy fried chicken feast complete with hot biscuits, smoked Gouda mac ‘n cheese and other summer sides.

Executive Chef Nathan Beauchamp is inviting groups of two or more to come enjoy summer-favorite fare, such as Maryland blue crabs, peel n’ eat shrimp, and a classic lobster boil complete with Andouille sausage, potatoes and corn on the cob. Ranging from $25-$40 per person, the feasts are available every Monday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The full schedule and menus are below.

JULY – Fried Chicken Picnics

(7/20, 7/27)

Chef Beauchamp is frying up juicy chicken and serving alongside family-style sides of creamy-style coleslaw, freshly baked biscuits, smoked Gouda mac ‘n cheese, and to end the meal, homemade strawberry shortcake.

AUGUST – Maryland Blue Crab Feasts

(8/3, 8/10, 8/17, 8/24, 8/31)

An Eastern Shore native, Chef Beauchamp’s childhood was spent cracking crabs on the Chesapeake Bay. He’s bringing in peak-season Maryland Blue Crabs, and serving with the sides he loves most – corn on the cob, coleslaw, peel n’ eat shrimp, and for dessert, homemade summer berry cobbler.

SEPTEMBER – Lobster Boils

(9/7, 9/14, 9/21, 9/28)

Chef Beauchamp will host a classic lobster boil evocative of a summer gathering on the beach, with fresh lobster, corn on the cob, Andouille sausage and red potatoes, and serve a freshly baked seasonal fruit pie to end the meal on a sweet note.

The picnics will range from $25-$40 per person, with a minimum of two people depending on the week’s menu. Menus are subject to change based on availability. Reservations are required and should be made in advance by calling the restaurant at (202) 735-0344. For more information, please visit www.faintinggoatdc.com.”

flip it

A reader reports:

“Looks like Flip It is finally going to open in Columbia Heights, but apparently at the expense of its Rhode Island Ave. location. Our server just told us they’re closing this location in the next couple days and moving, citing that business during the week was never very good. Pretty big blow to those of us with high hopes for Rhode Island Ave.”

Ed. Note: The original Flip It is located at 4532 Georgia Ave, NW.
