Back in August many of us were saddened to learn that the OG Chez Billy in Petworth had closed and would be reopening with a new concept. Having seen the new space and tasted the new concept, while I always will be a bit nostalgic for the old days, I’m super excited because Chef Tim Ma is the man and I freaking love pot stickers!!

Those who still lament the loss of Chez Billy may remain saddened by some of the interior changes (however: an even better renovated back patio will be coming this spring.) But those who love good food for a good price in a cool space will be very very happy.

For those not familiar with the background of Ten Tigers:

“Ian and Eric Hilton, together with partners Scott Herman and Chef Tim Ma are set to open Ten Tigers Parlour, a neighborhood tea house and bar on December 10 in Petworth. Located in the former Chez Billy space at 3813 Georgia Avenue, NW, the Ten Tigers Parlour will feature an eclectic menu of cocktails, teas, Asian-style street food and pastries throughout the day and evening.

The concept of Ten Tigers Parlour is inspired by the Chinese cultural influences, where tea houses traditionally serve as the community gathering place not only to eat, but to connect. “It has always been our goal to create a great neighborhood spot for people; an extension of their living rooms,” says partner Ian Hilton.

Chef Tim Ma, of Kyirisan, Water & Wall and Chase the Submarine has developed a menu of casual favorites, inspired by dishes he enjoyed as a young child. “I want to present food that is close to my heart, said Chef Tim Ma. It’s great to be able to offer simple dishes that require technique, but are unpretentious and just tasty.” The menu is crafted around a selection of handmade Soup Dumplings ($12), a popular dish not easily found in town. There will be handmade Bao Buns ($9), Pan-Fried Dumplings ($7), a selection of noodles ($11 each), Rice Donburi ($10) and more of Chef Ma’s childhood favorites. Pastry Chef Mollie Bird has designed a offering of Chinese pastries for Ten Tigers that includes egg tarts, sesame balls, almond breads and other specialties. (more…)

Thanks to all who emailed and tweeted the update. One reader writes:

“Looks like the District 2 location on Wisconsin and Macomb will become Heritage India. The location closed in January 2015 due to a fire that took out the restaurant as well as other small businesses adjacent to it. None of those locations have since been occupied.”

Ed. Note: Before District 2 Bar & Grille this space was Alliance Tavern and Enology Wine Bar before that. Before Enology I’m blanking but I want to say a coffee shop but you get the drift. Lots of luck to Heritage India who also have a location at 2400 Wisconsin Ave, NW – you can see their menu here.

Thanks to all who emailed and tweeted word. A reader first reported earlier last week (and others have confirmed they were dark through the weekend):

“Swampoodle’s been closed up tight for at least two nights in a row. I wonder if this is the end for them?”

This one hurts given how long it took Swampoodle to get open.

Their last facebook post was written on Nov. 29th gives no indication that anything was amiss:

“#TACOTUESDAY has arrived! Get three tacos and a margarita for $12 #delicioso”

Updates when more is known.

From an email:

“For the month of December, Brookland’s Finest Chef Shannan Troncoso will put a spin on the restaurant’s weekly distiller dinner series. The kitchen will pay homage to the restaurant’s diverse staff and their backgrounds with a rotating menu of how holiday meals are celebrated in their specific countries, as well as here in the U.S. In collaboration with Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, each week will celebrate the flavors of a different country with a three-course dinner with cocktail pairings. The first dinner on December 6 will honor the flavors and ingredients of El Salvador with items like Pupusas, Smoked Pork Tamales and Arroz con Leche. The following week’s dinners will highlight flavors of Italy (12/13), New Orleans (12/20) and Mexico (12/27), respectively – all representative of the multi-cultural staff at Brookland’s Finest. Each of the three-course dinners with cocktail pairings is priced at $35 per person, and full menu details can be found below.

Additionally, on New Year’s Eve, Brookland’s Finest will offer a special three-course dinner-for-two menu to ring in the new year. The menu, created by Chef Shannan Troncoso, begins with Shrimp Cocktail with Gulf Shrimp, spicy cocktail sauce and Old Bay vinaigrette; followed by a second course of Surf and Turf featuring Rib Eye with whole Wild Maine Lobster, grilled rapini, roasted garlic mashed potatoes and béarnaise sauce; and finished with slices of Lady Baltimore cake and Red Velvet cake, along with a champagne toast. The special menu is available for $50 on New Year’s Eve only from 5:00 p.m. to close.”

So they underestimated the reopening date. It will be worth the wait for the El Sol reincarnation! Stay tuned for an exact opening date, (I’ve sent an email for confirmation) possibly Dec. 1st according to their website:

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I live in Adams Morgan and are very excited for the Line Hotel to be completed. Do you know if there are plans to put a bar and/or restaurant on the roof?”

img_8477

Back in March I shared the scuttlebutt, since confirmed, that Toki Underground founder and Maketto’s Erik Bruner-Yang and Woodberry Kitchen’s Spike Gjerde would be opening up restaurants at The Line. Anyone happen to know if there are roof top plans?
