The Washington Business Journal broke the great news on Friday:

“The chef and restaurateur, who most recently worked as kitchen manager at Sticky Rice on H Street NE, is striking out on his own in the same neighborhood. He will open Toki Underground in a 950-square-foot space at 1234 (yeah, that’s not a typo) H St. NE, above popular neighborhood bar The Pug.”

This is phenomenal news. Noodle shops are a great inexpensive option for good grub. I can’t wait for them to open!

The Palm is located at 1225 19th Street, NW. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy the Palm restaurant up in NYC but never had the chance (money) to hit the DC location. I think the DC one is the original, right? Are these among the best steaks in town? You can see the dinner menu here.

From a reader:

“Red Rocks is against Flippin Pizza neck and neck for Washingtonian’s best pizza in washington competition. Never eaten at flippin so they could be perfectly good pizza, but it is important to note that they don’t actually have a store within the DC city limits, and they are a California-based chain operation who mobilized members of their club by offering them a free pizza if Flippin wins. So they are most likely getting votes from people outside the DC area. The voting ends tomorrow at noon, and they are ahead right now by a slim margin.

This isn’t to say that their efforts aren’t “fair” since all’s fair in pizza wars… but two can play at that game! So I was hoping you could plug Red Rocks and mobilize your readers to participate in the vote and maybe RR can pull it out.”

Piccante Pizza is coming to 2120 18th Street in Adams Morgan. 18th Street is a pretty competitive pizza spot with over a half dozen spots already. It’ll be interesting to see if this spot can differentiate itself from the others. But look how happy it’ll make you:

Napa 1015 is located at 1015 H Street, NE. I’m very curious about this spot as I’ve heard very mixed reviews. Some folks seem to love it and some hate it. I’ve heard very few mediocre comments. You can see the menu here. So what’s the scoop – thumbs up or down?

“Dear PoP,

Do you know anyone who has tried the brand new place called Acacia Bistro, 4340 Connecticut Ave. NW, that just opened up in Van Ness? (on Connecticut and Yuma St. where the Schlotsky’s deli used to be). It says that it has healthy food during the day or something along those lines but when I ran by the other evening it looked more like a wine bar that serves food. I am SO excited that there is a hip place walking distance in the neighborhood and wanted to see if anyone had (hopefully good) reviews.”

Anyone check it out yet?

I was saddened to see Asmara Cafe, located at 9th and V Streets, was closed. I’m not sure if it’s permanently closed or getting renovated. Peeking in the window, the inside looked to be trashed. Sadly, I suspect it is permanently closed as I didn’t see any permits out front for a renovation. This was one of my favorite spots to hit before going to the nearby 9:30 Club.
