“Dear PoP,

One of our favorite food spots in town is Thai X-ing at Florida Ave and 5th NW – best Thai food in the city. But over the last month, nobody seems able to get hold of Taw (owner/chef) – nobody answers the kitchen phone or calls back when a message is left, and Taw’s cell is out of service. We’ve not had a chance to go by the restaurant itself, but we’re wondering if anybody knows what’s going on – we would hate to lose this wonderful little gem of a restaurant!

Anybody know what’s up?”

Uh-oh. We judged this restaurant almost exactly a year ago and there were tons of fans. Any regulars know what’s going on?

Back in June I mentioned that Taylor’s was opening up a second location in the Mt. Vernon Triangle neighborhood (485 K St., NW in the City Vista building). Tuesday evening they had a pre-opening for bloggers/media etc. This spot opens to the public on Friday at 11am. I asked about their delivery radius but they weren’t 100% certain yet. They may deliver as far as Logan Circle and areas of Dupont. More on the delivery radius when it becomes finalized. As I said before, the folks who live nearby are supremely lucky to get this addition.

I am happy to report that the sandwiches were as delicious as they are at their original H Street, NE location. I always get one of the prosciutto sandwiches. This one had prosciutto, provolone, roasted red peppers and lettuce:

The store looks great too, it had a very similar feel and look to the original store. I thought the lights were the coolest part:

New tavern coming to 501 8th Street, SE on Barracks Row. The alcohol license says it will be a tavern featuring regional and seasonal combinations of local seafood with recorded music. The occupancy is 49 with an additional 32 for the sidewalk cafe.

In the meantime check out the murals adorning the building after the jump. (more…)

If you haven’t stopped in to Aroma Bakery & Market, located at 1320 U Street, NW, you are in for a treat. They’ve added tons of pastry options. They even have canolis! The pastries come from Patisserie Poupon in Baltimore and the bread comes from LYONBAKERY. Many of the pastries are really like works of art. Per your request, they’ve also added some more seats and free internet. If you’d like any more changes just let them know in the comments as they are very open and receptive to your suggestions.

7th Hill Pizzeria and Monmartre are located at 327 7th St SE near Eastern Market. They are owned by the same folks and 7th Hill only recently opened up. My friends tell me the pizza was great. Anyone else check them out yet? Sorry to combine the two but it seemed to make sense. You can see Monmatre’s menus here.

When I first broke the news, in April, that IHOP was considering coming to DC USA in Columbia Heights there was a huge reaction – mostly positive. As I’ve received numerous inquiries from readers about the status – this should be some welcome news. A reader writes:

“I went to the Pleasant Plains Civic Association meeting this past Saturday, where the association’s president announced that IHOP signed something (letter of intent or lease or something) that ensures they’re coming to DCUSA!”

Oh yeah! And I’ve got more good news coming later this week…

Ever since Circle Boutique closed their doors at 1736 14th Street, NW I’ve been wondering what may go into that spot. Now keep in mind, whenever I use scuttlebutt in the title, it is just that, scuttlebutt. Rumor. Hearsay.  I did hear it from a very reliable source but I don’t believe anything is in stone at the moment.

Nevertheless, I’m pretty excited about this possibility. I’m hearing that Crepes-a-Go-Go may open up another location at this spot. They currently have a store at 2122 P Street, NW. You can see their menu here. Any fans? Think a crepe spot will work for this location on 14th near Logan Circle?

I’ve eagerly been anticipating the progress of 1359 U Street, NW. This is the spot from the folks behind Marvin to be called Patty Boom Boom. It will be a tavern that serves Jamaican patties and have DJs, live reggae bands and dancing. Here’s sorta what it looked like in May ’08 when we first heard about it. Now that the fencing is down it’s amazing how good it now looks.

Mazu is located at 1100 New York Avenue, NW. Their Web site says:

“Our meticulously selected assortment of Pan-Asian cuisine fuse tradition with contemporary flare, to create a culinary excursion into the elaborate palate of the Orient.”

You can see their menus here. Mmm, looks good. Any fans out there? I of course just wanted another excuse to post one of my favorite buildings in DC…

Yesterday when I mentioned Room 11 (11th and Lamont Streets, NW) was having a gin tasting and Punch Club was set to return, a reader mentioned hearing a rumor of an expansion. Well, obviously I had to get a taste of gin and while I was there I asked if the rumors of an expansion were true. And they are! However, it is only in the very very very early stages and nothing has been finalized. The space where they would expand is currently occupied by Jeans N Things. This makes a lot of sense as I don’t think I’ve ever seen a patron inside Jeans N Things.  Hopefully the negotiations will go well as Room 11 could definitely use some more room.
