Just saw this application for Carmine’s Italian Restaurant coming to 425 7th Street, NW. It actually fills up two of the storefronts. Looks like it’ll be huge because it says the occupancy is 720. Not sure if that’s a typo I’m guessing it’s more like 220 but who knows. Here’s the application:

The Topaz Bar is located in the Topaz Hotel located at 1733 N Street, NW (not far from the recently judged restaurant Iron Gate). Their Web site says:

“Light years beyond the ordinary Washington, DC restaurant and lounge, Topaz Bar is a vibrant, mystical experience of contemporary urban chic and culinary sophistication.”

So how is the culinary sophistication?

Los Hermanos is located at 1430 Park Road, NW. I had never noticed this spot before either but it’s not a new restaurant simply a new sign. I walked inside and was surprised how big the space is. Very deceiving from the outside. It’s a great space that smelled delicious. The folks were really friendly and there was a heated game of dominoes going on. All around a great vibe. So how’s the food!?!?

“Dear PoP,

Businesses ransacked in Cleveland Park. Not sure if you heard, but sometime this morning [Thursday] Zoo Bar, Nam Viet and Byblos were broken into and trashed. They all appear to be back open for business. Must have been a quiet morning over in CP for that kind of shit to happen. Front door window of Palena got smashed as well, but that was it. I rode by all the places on the way home and it looked like they had cleaned everything up. Front door at Palena was replaced before 5pm and Nam Viet neon sign said “open”. Word on the street is that the goons started at Zoo Bar (allegedly tore the place up) then Nam Viet, then Byblos (broke into their register) and then Palena.”

There is a report in the Washington Post here.

I’m surprised they were able to do so much damage without attracting more attention. Glad the stores were able to make the repairs so quickly.

In happier news the City Paper reports that Palena is in the process of trying to expand into the now vacant space next door (formerly housing Magruder’s):

“If everything falls into place for Ruta, Palena will look nothing like its current incarnation. It will add 60 seats to the dining room as well as a summer garden with seating for another 36 diners. Ruta would also add more kitchen space.”

We previously judged Palena here.

I gave a sneak peek of Thai Tanic II last week which is located at 3462 14th Street, NW in the retail space of the Allegro apartments. At the time they were hoping to open up last weekend but a bit of delay has pushed the grand opening to Friday, October 2nd. Today! Lots of folks have been sending follow up emails inquiring when the official opening will be. So this is great news! I have to say, I walked by Thursday evening and if you can imagine it looks 100 times better than the sneak peek photos I posted.

“Dear PoP,

Can you confirm that Pho 14 will start offering delivery next month? This will ALMOST make up for moving outside the Tono Sushi delivery range.”

I stopped by Pho 14, located at 1436 Park Rd. NW, and sadly delivery will not be coming until November. It was supposed to come in October but there was some difficulty with staffing. They think they will hire someone start delivery sometime in November. And for the real question – what is the delivery radius? 3 miles! That should hook a lot of us up.

In other Pho news, the new spot, possibly to be names Pho Viet, opening up at 3515 14th Street, NW still looks a few weeks away from opening. Stay tuned on both fronts.

Bar Dupont is located at 1500 New Hampshire Avenue NW in the former location of Biddy Mulligan’s. It’s been almost a year since Biddy Mulligan’s closed so I thought it was about time to judge Bar Dupont. How’s the atmosphere? Better or worse than than Biddy’s? Do they serve food as well? It looks pretty swank – how are the prices? Overall – thumbs up or down?
