From an email:

Come to Room 11 on Monday, November 30th for a celebration of Scotland’s National Holiday, St. Andrew’s Day, from 5 pm to closing. We’ll have guest tap Brooklyn Winter Ale, a Scotch-style Ale (think dark rich and malty) on
draft while it lasts. From 8:30 to 10 pm Scottish gin Hendrick’s will be offering free samples and free shoeshines! We’ll also have Scotch whiskey and cocktail specials from Compass Box and we’ll declare the winner of the Highland Bitters Scottish Cocktail Smackdown. Will the Mel Gibson (Hendrick’s Martini with house-made Highland Bitters and a house-pickled onion) or the Liam Neeson (Compass Box Asyla with sweet and dry vermouth and house-made Highland Bitters) emerge victorious? Cast your vote by ordering one then feast on some delicious Scottish food specials from Chef Ben Gilligan.

And with the addition of this sweet section of their sign, I have nothing more to add to Park Road’s newest Peruvian Chicken spot, Senor Chicken…

On a totally unrelated note, man Sunday was beautiful and I realized while I’ve admired Rock Creek Park before, I’ve never appreciated the actual creek. It is looking fantastic:

“Dear PoP,

On my way to work today, I noticed that the CPK on Conn and N was closed (with paper over the windows). While I understand that CPK isn’t the heart and soul of DC’s gastronomic culture, I still like a good bowl of split pea and some weird pizza every now and then. No one seems to know what happened and I’ve noticed lots of people trying to peak in to see if a fire or something like that occured.

Any news would be greatly appreciated.”

I stopped by the building at 1250 Connecticut Ave., NW and spoke with one of the building’s employees. She told me that CPK did not renew their lease so they have closed up. She wasn’t sure what was going into the space, though she guesses another restaurant, and she wasn’t sure whether or not CPK was going to open up in another location.

I’m just curious – do other folks like CPK?

“Dear PoP,

I saw something yesterday while taking a walk during work that I thought I would pass along. There are several flyers posted in the Dupont area announcing that Rosemary’s Thyme on 18th St is offering a totally free Thanksgiving dinner from 12-2pm Thanksgiving Day. I think this would be a great opportunity for some of us who live comfortable lives to take someone who may not have enough to eat not only for a meal but for some genuine human interaction.”

This is very cool of Rosemary’s Thyme.

This is sad news. A reader writes:

“Hey there, have you heard anything about rumors of Vegetate (1414 9th Street, NW), the veggie place by 9th and O, closing on Nov. 28? The scuttlebutt is that the landlord is tripling their rent.”

We judged Vegetate back in Dec. ’08 and there were lots of fans. Today the CCCA blog shares a note from the owners:

“We’re writing with some unfortunate news. Vegetate on 9th Street is going to be closing at the end of this month. Our lease is up and we’ve decided to look for a new location.

We will let all of you know once we’ve found a new space. In the meantime, we’ll be doing select catered events.

Thank you for all your support over the years. Those of you in the area, please stop by for one last dinner at Vegetate’s 9th Street home.

Best,
Dominic & Jennifer”

Here’s to hoping they find a new spot soon!

Eatonville is located at 2121 14th St NW between V and W Streets. I hadn’t stopped in since they opened and holy cow does the place look awesome! The upstairs and downstairs are equally fantastic. I was at an event so only had some appetizers. But for folks who have gone to eat a proper meal – thumbs up or down? Anything on the menu you highly recommend? You can see their menus here.

El Tamarindo is located at 1785 Florida Ave, NW. I know winter is coming up but I think if this section of Florida Ave. get some outdoor seating it will really improve the overall feel of the block. They are only applying for a spot to seat 14 people. Looking forward to it!

A commenter writes from yesterday’s post showing before and after pictures from 14th Street:

“The Solea “Before” picture is almost identical to a building under renovation on 14th between N and Rhode Island. It’s going to be a Subway sandwich shop.”

I was wondering what that spot was going to become as last weekend when I walked by it looked very close to being finished. I’ll go by this weekend and try to confirm whether or not a Subway sandwich shop is going in.

And while the commercials say Subway is a healthy choice I thought I could combine this FQoTD from a reader:

“Aside from going to the typical weights and cardio gyms, can people recommend alternative places to go for staying in shape? Organized soccer leagues? Gymnastics? Dance studios? Running groups? I’ve seen that group of people at Meridian Hill Park who do what looks to be some sort of couples acrobatics – even stuff like that. What alternative programs are out there for staying in shape?”

I know ultimate frisbee kicked my ass. I’m sticking with walking all over town taking pictures… Anyone have good alternatives for staying in shape besides going to the gym?

Odeon Cafe is located at 1714 Connecticut Ave, NW. I’ve always been tempted by the sign for a “whole Maine Lobster” deal out front. Their Web site says:

“All sorts of seafood make their way into the antipasto, salads, 16 pasta dishes, 12 entrees and pizzas. To wit: scampi de granchi (butter fried shrimp stuffed with crabmeat) and the fresh catch of the day. Complimentary marinated olives and pepperocini along with crusty Italian rolls, provide tasty noshes while awaiting the main course.”

You can see their menus here. Any fans? Any particular specialty you’d recommend?
