This morning I passed on the word from Creme’s Web site saying that they had closed. Turns out it was a hoax of sorts. Thanks to a reader for sending this link:

The restaurant’s management team, which has been running the location for 6 years, was dismissed and their last day was Thursday. For the time being, Crème Café and current chef, Orlando Hitzig, will continue normal operations, though there may be changes on the horizon. “The chef is going to stay on for now,” Alewa says, “We might make a change and go back to our original style of menu. Though it will be very similar.”

Which, of course, is a far cry from shuttering its doors.

Thanks to a reader for the heads up. Creme’s Web site confirms:

“When we opened Creme Cafe almost 6 years ago, we had no idea the lasting impact it would have on our lives. We’ve made great friends, started lifelong relationships – and above all, created a restaurant where everyone was truly welcome – and able to call it their own.

Unfortunately, for Creme, the time has come that we must close… Our staff – both past and present – have accomplished every goal we set when we opened Creme. We are proud of the place we forged in our community as a locally owned, independent business where friends and family came together to share a meal. To all the regulars, friends, guests who came in the front door and to all the staff, purveyors and vendors who came in the back door, THANK YOU!!!!.”

We spoke about their brunch back in May ’08. Will you miss them?

Recently I noted that Hadiyah Cafe had closed but I noticed a permit in the window so I had hopes of a proper restaurant coming in. It was a good hunch as a recently applied for liquor license application indicates:

“New southern cuisine restaurant, providing good and healthy foods to the community, and quiet jazz for entertainment. Occupancy load is 23”

I’ll be sure to update when they look closer to opening up.

Late last week the GW Hatchet shared the good news:

“Sweetgreen, a popular salad chain, is one of three new leases confirmed to be part of The Avenue development lot across from GW Hospital.

Boston Properties, the developer of the mixed-use property at 2200 Pennsylvania Ave., – formerly known as Square 54 – has also signed leases with Citibank and a restaurant called Roti.”

I wonder if Roti is the same place that recently opened at 1747 Pennsylvania Ave, NW.

We’ve also learned that 2200 Pennsylvania Ave, NW will be home to a Whole Foods and District Table/District Burger, a “new Restaurant serving American brasserie fine dining menu with casual burger and shake menu.”

The retail space seems to be filling out nicely.

J & G Steakhouse is located at 515 15th Street Northwest behind the W Hotel. Their Web site says:

“A composition of Jean-Georges’ favorite dishes from his New York restaurants as well as an inspired steakhouse menu with composed and simply grilled items.

Located on Pennsylvania Avenue, J&G Steakhouse offers a worldly collection of steakhouse classics for W Washington D.C. guests and locals alike. Premium meats and a global selection of fresh fish will be the backbone of the menu, including the highest quality raw items from East and West Coasts, uniquely creative appetizers, as well as prime cuts of meat char grilled to perfection with side dishes, including vegetables and potatoes.”

You can see their menus here. Any fans?

Domku is located at 821 Upshur St NW. Back when I first started this site we didn’t have this section so we’re long over due for this one. Their Web site says:

“Since opening in early 2005, Domku has offered DC residents and tourists a unique dining alternative to the hurried and glitzy offerings of downtown DC. The eclectic menu of mostly Slavic and Scandinavian fare has brought pierogis, borscht, goulash, Janssen’s Temptation, and pickled herring into the everyday language of DC diners. Our menu stays as true to the foods of the region as possible but journeys, on occasion, to other former Soviet bloc regions such as Hungary, Bulgaria and the Caucasus. Perfect for cold weather months, the food is light and healthful enough to enjoy all year long.”

You can see their menus here. Back when Domku first opened it was a huge score for the neighborhood attracting folks from all over the city. Now that it’s been over 5 years what are your thoughts?

The folks from Subway send the good word (and photos):

“I am very please to tell you that we are finally opening the Petworth Subway Tuesday morning (Sept. 28) at 7am. The hours of operation will be Monday – Friday 7am – 10pm, Sat. 8am – 10pm and Sun. 9am -10pm.”

The inside is looking good. It is located on Georgia Ave, NW above the Petworth metro (next to Sala Thai.)

According to a press release they’ll be open from 7am – 8pm at 906 F St, NW. For those that live or work nearby be sure to let us know what you think. You can see their menu here. I was definitely excited to see this sign on Sunday:
