Received this first review from a reader last week:

“Ate at Hot N Juicy Crawfish last night. Was good, but it’s hard to fill up on crawfish. Wish they served more main dishes like burgers or fish as crawfish make for a good appetizer. Staff was very nice and even tied a bib on for me since my hands were already ensconced in crawfish entrails.. Here is a picture of our aftermath. Dinner for three = $80.00”

They are located in Woodley Park at 2651 Connecticut Ave, NW. Anyone else check them out during their grand opening?

Spaghetti and Meatballs

It’s lunch time…so that got me thinking about food! Even your Lord of Petworth gets hungry from time to time.

Being home for the holidays reminded me of something that always annoys me about DC–the lack of a good, basic, delicious “red sauce” Italian joint in the District.

By “red sauce” I mean the kind of Italian restaurant we used to have in Ohio–big heaping mounds of overcooked pasta, a menu that contained no non-English words except “lasagna” and “cannoli,” and everything (even the cannoli) was drowned in thick, sweet, red sauce. Or, as some are known to call it, “red gravy.”

I want no fancy names, no regional specialties, just an honest to goodness basic awesome deliciousness.

I’ve tried at least two dozen places in DC and they are either too fancy, too gourmet, too lame, or just not right. Why is this so elusive?!?

What are your recommendations?

HomeMade Pizza Co. already has a location at 14th and Church St, NW in Logan Circle. You can see their menu here. They opened the 14th St, NW location back in Jan. ’10. From their Web site:

Back when HomeMade Pizza Co. was just a thought scribbled on a napkin, most people had never heard of bake-at-home pizza. But it seemed like a good idea to us: really delicious pizza that bakes up in minutes, fresh from your own oven. What’s not to like? So in 1997 we set out to do it right, using all-natural ingredients and a dough recipe rolled out over months of taste testing conducted by the toughest critics on the planet: our friends.

Once we finally opened, those who gave us a try really seemed to connect with HomeMade. And with every new neighborhood came more friends looking for quick, easy, amazing dinners. Along the way, we added fresh salads and mouthwatering desserts… and suddenly, here we are.

There new location will be in an old Yoga Studio space (the mural has been painted over) at 1826 Wisconsin Ave, NW. Anyone converted to the take home pizza?

801 Penn. Ave, NW is right near Archives Navy Memorial. I’ll def. be keeping my eye on this space – I’m super intrigued. Anyone happen to hear anything? Any guesses to what/who could be a fast food and bakery?

It’s been a big week for expansions as we just learned that Bar Pilar will also be expanding soon at 1833 14th St, NW. Komi located at 1509 17th Street, NW has long been on my special occasion must try restaurants list. We judged Komi back in Feb. ’09. And now it soon looks like I might get a chance to try them out. Even before Pres. Obama visited the restaurant it has always been tough to get a reservation.

A recent liquor license amendment says:

“The licensee requests the following substantial change of an Expansion of the premises for the space below and adjacent to the current premises. This will include an additional 6 seats adjacent and 26 seats below for a total increase to 74 seats. There is an additional expansion to increase the Sidewalk Café seating by 20 seats.”

I’m guessing that’s going to be into the dry cleaners space. Do you think an expansion is a good idea?

I just noticed that House of Kabob has opened up at 2029 P St, NW above Panas Empanadas. According to their Web site:

“Food Corner Kabob was started by the owner Najib Sidiqi. The first branch of Food Corner was in Annandale, VA, an area populated with a diverse community from all areas of the globe. Najib put his Afghani homestyle recipes to work in his kitchen and founded an original and authentic Afghani cuisine. This restaurant is not only popular to local Afghans, but to all who enjoy a great flavored and very well portioned meal at great price.”

You can see their menus here. Anyone check them out yet? Any fans?

Furin’s is located at 2805 M St, NW in Georgetown. Their Web site says:

“FURIN’S OF GEORGETOWN, offering full service catering, a cafe, and a bakery with a local neighborhood charm…

Focusing on attention and care of each entree, salad, business lunch and most importantly our decadent, moist cakes. With over 42 years of catering experience, a perfect catered affair is Guaranteed.”

You can see their lunch menu here.

Any fans? Any must order sandwiches?

Bar Pilar is located at 1833 14th St, NW (south of T street). Anyone who has spent time at Bar Pilar on a Friday or Saturday night will recognize that an expansion would provide some needed breathing room. Personally I think it would be great.

According to a liquor license amendment recently posted out front, the:

“LICENSEE REQUESTS EXPANSION OF PREMISE TO INCLUDE 2ND FLOOR FOR 46 ADDITIONAL SEATS”

Their Web site reminds me:

“Every Tuesday night from 5pm – 11pm our chefs prepare a home style meal inspired by different cultures. From rustic French to American picnic food, come discover our home cooking with your friends and you’ll be sure to leave happy. Each week he creates a menu based on the freshest produces available to him that week. No future menus have yet been established. The theme is usually announced each week a couple days in advance of the event.”

You can see their regular menu here.

And on a side note while looking upstairs I was reminded of their awesome art deco numbers:

As well as some awesome sculptures:
