709 H Street, NE to become Po Boys Kitchen

The list of new bars and restaurants coming to H St, NE is seemingly endless. A couple of new good options are gonna pop up on the 600 and 700 block of H St, NE. Pictured above is 709 H Street NE which will become Po Boys Kitchen. A liquor license application on the front door says:

“New restaurant serving Po Boys Subs, light dinners and gourmet foods. Entertainment will include small bands featuring reggae and jazz on occasion. Seating capacity is 99. Total load is 129. Summer Garden with seating for approximately 30 patrons.”

644 H Street, NE to become Hikari Sushi and Sake Bar

Stay tuned for more info as both spots get closer to opening. It’s not clear which will open first as Po Boys Kitchen looks like it has a big build out ahead of it and Hikari Sushi and Sake Bar doesn’t appear to have applied for a liquor license yet.

Whenever they do open – I’ll be sure to revisit.

While the sign on the door says Galileo III has simply closed for renovations – the Washington Post reports:

“The restaurant that was supposed to resurrect Roberto Donna’s sagging fortunes has now contributed to his decline. The celebrity chef confirmed this afternoon that Galileo III at 600 14th St. NW has officially ceased operations.”

Galileo III was located in the old Butterfield 9 space. I’ll keep my eyes on the space to see who will/what will take over.

Rendering of Chez Billy to be located at 3813 Georgia Ave, NW

“Dear PoP,

I was at the ANC 4C meeting last week and was pleased that the commission voted unanimously to support the liquor license for Chez Billy (in the Billy Simpson’s space). The general manager made his pitch and it sounded great. They passed around a floor plan and rendering that differs a little from the last one you posted. Most notably, the main bar will now be open to the floor above with 2 interior balconies overlooking it (with bar stools and counter space) as illustrated in the rendering. See attached. It looks awesome! According to the manager, if all goes well, they will be open by December 1st.”

Chez Billy Floor Plans

I also spoke with the owners who confirmed an opening (knock wood, knock wood) of Chez Billy, to be located at 3813 Georgia Ave, NW (just north of the Petworth metro), in 8-10 weeks.

We last spoke about the space back in early August.

Like the idea of a French Bistro?

Between this and the approval for the new Petworth Safeway across the street – we are not going to recognize this stretch of a Georgia Ave in the near future. Sweet!

And these photos are just from the street. Pearl Dive Oyster Palace located at 1612 14th St NW in the old 100% Mexico space – has achieved an amazing transformation. I was walking by last night and could hardly believe my eyes.

100% Mexico closed their doors in 2007

This has rocketed to the top of the list of places I can’t wait to try.

And mad props for the sweet signage as well:

Chidogo’s opened up back in Nov. ’10 at 1934 14th Street, NW (just south of U St.) There was a lot of anticipation – what’s the word now that they’ve been open a while?

You heard about it here first as mere scuttlebutt back in Feb. ’11. And today’s the day you can get a taste. From an email:

“ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen, the much-anticipated new restaurant by Steve Ells and his team at Chipotle, will open today, Thursday, September 15, from 11 am until 10 pm at 1516 Connecticut Ave just above Dupont Circle in the District. Serving noodle and rice bowls and báhn mi, (Vietnamese subs) filled with assertively spiced meats, vegetables and sauces, ShopHouse is offering its version of what you might find at hawker stalls in Singapore, Bangkok or Hanoi.”

We’ll be back for a proper judging after they’ve been open for a bit. But if anyone stops by and has an early taste/opinion – let us know what you think.

“Dear PoP,

I was wondering if you might have heard anything about why Marrakesh Palace has been closed since the weekend before the earthquake. For a while, trying to place online reservations kept pushing you off a week because they were “closed due to hurricane Irene.” I have seen quite a few people showing up and discovering the place locked and dark…so apparently whatever the deal is, no one seem to know. A number of folks have asked me what’s the story, but I have nothing.”

I stopped by yesterday and the place was still locked. Phone calls go unanswered. Anyone know what’s up?

Marrakesh Palace is located at 2147 P Street NW. We judged them back in Sept. ’09.

From a press release:

“DC9ʼs new chef Amber Bursik is turning traditional notions of what “bar food” means on its head, using her southern roots and classical training to create a menu that combines classic fair and unique homemade treats. Bursik, an honors graduate from L’Academie D’Cuisine, has crafted a new menu abandoning the traditional emphasis on heavy, fried, out of the freezer items, for more palate-pleasing modern bar food, and while some items may still visit the fryer, they are anything but forgettable.

Bursik’s effort to bring a top quality dining experience to a rock bar is part of a growing movement in Washington, DC, where chefs are increasingly ditching the trappings of fine dinning for a more relaxed, and inexpensive atmosphere. “I believe bar food does not have to come from a frozen bag; you can make good food from scratch and serve it at reasonable prices.” says Bursik.

New items include The Havana from Savannah, a grilled delight featuring homemade North Carolina-style pulled pork (also available as a sandwich itself), but topped with ham, Swiss, mustard and pickles. The Fried Chicken is marinated 24 hours, then fried to a crispy finish. Bursik also offers up a vegetarian take on the South’s classic Red Beans and Rice that is as smokey and hardy as the pork-based original.

For a snack, try Spiced Pecans, Pimento Cheese Deviled Eggs, or Fried Green Tomatoes with Tabasco aioli. And there’s the Mason Dixon Line Popcorn Chicken — above the line it’s the classic Buffalo-style, while below you are treated to bourbon fig glaze.

Of course, Bursik hasn’t abandoned the classic burgers and hand-cut fries that helped make DC9 a neighborhood favorite in Washington’s popular U St Corridor. But even here Bursik’s touch can be seen. The novel Conservationist Burger features a seasonal conserve or pickle, the new Black Smith Burger comes rubbed in cajun spices then covered with bleu cheese, caramelized onions and blackened aioli, and the sure-to- become a favorite Herbert Burger: topped with fried green tomato,

applewood smoked bacon and Tabasco aioli. All burgers are available in veggie versions, all are customizable, and all sauces are made in-house.

Prior to taking the reigns at DC9, Bursik worked for James Beard Award-winning and former White House Chef Frank Ruta at Palena. Before that, Bursik cooked under rising culinary star Barton Seaver at Hook.

DC9’s kitchen is open 5-10:30pm Sunday to Thursday and 5- 11pm Friday and Saturday. Food service is available on all open floors. The first floor jukebox bar is open seven nights a week with no cover. The second floor hosts national and local bands, or live DJs most nights of the week. And, the roof top bar is open every night, weather permitting.”

One Lounge is located at 1606 20th Street NW. Yesterday they sent out a press release announcing they are going to be open for lunch as well:

The restaurant will now serve lunch Monday through Friday from 11am to 3pm, featuring a combination of One Lounge’s traditional menu items, alongside newly crafted $9.99 lunch specials. The affordable mid-day meals are tailored to the neighborhood’s on-the-go crowd and will rotate each day. Daily lunch specials will showcase three unique entrées, including a choice of a crisp salad and a warm bread roll, two slices of warm pizza and a side salad, or a hand-made gourmet sandwich with chips.

Designed to accommodate diners on a tight lunch schedule, the $9.99 special lunch offering is an unbeatable deal with quick service. One Lounge’s special lunch items include the options of:

1. Monday: choose between (A) One Lounge grilled steak salad, (B) Mediterranean pizza with fresh veggies, or (C) classic chicken parmesan sandwich

2. Tuesday: (A) One Lounge grilled chicken salad, (B) classic cheese pizza with fresh basil, or (C) grilled chicken sandwich with pesto mayo

3. Wednesday: (A) Roasted beet salad with arugula and goat cheese, (B) BBQ Chicken Pizza with cilantro and smoked gouda, or (C) Italian hoagie with olive oil and sweet peppers

4. Thursday: (A) Green bean and asparagus salad, (B) Pepperoni and sausage pizza, or (C) grilled chicken T.B.M. with dijon vinaigrette

5. Friday: (A) Grilled apple salad with walnuts and bleu cheese, (B) Pepperoni and pineapple pizza, or (C) One Lounge burger with provolone cheese

Anyone try them out for dinner? Is it a good place for a drink?

Old Sabores space located next to Dino at 3435B Connecticut Ave. NW

“Dear PoP,

Rumor has it that Dupont bar St. Arnold is moving biergarten operations in. Can PoP confirm? The thought of having such an establishment just steps from my door is fundamentally titillating.”

Ever since Sabores closed back in June ’11 folks have been wondering who’ll be moving in. I’m happy to say that I’ve confirmed with the folks at St. Arnold’s Belgian Restaurant that they’ve signed of a lease not only for the old Sabores space but also for the old Club Soda space located downstairs (on the other side of Dino.) This will be there 2nd location as they are keeping their Dupont location on Jefferson St, NW which opened back in Dec. ’10.

The former Sabores space will be more of a restaurant feel and the space downstairs will be more of a pub feel. Additionally the downstairs space will have lots of tvs to watch sports. The hope is that the former Sabores space will open up in November and the downstairs space hopes to open shortly thereafter.

Former Uptown Tavern/Club Soda space to the south of Dino

You can see St. Arnold’s Food menu here and their beer list here.

All in all, I think this is pretty great news for Cleveland Park.
