7th and O St, NW

Looks like Shaw is about to get a new BBQ joint. A chef tells me that he has just signed a lease near the O Street Market (we should know the exact address soon) for a space that will become the Butcher Shoppe. This is the same chef who was deciding between a wine bar and Tavern that we spoke about last December. He has decided to change the concept to a casual BBQ joint with a beer garden that will feature home made sausages and smoked bbq serving ribs, briskets etc.

How does the menu sound?

Full menu after the jump. (more…)

2120 P St, NW

Yesterday afternoon I mentioned that Vento Restaurant had closed at 2120 P St, NW in Dupont. I got some very reliable scuttlebutt saying that it is going to become a Tex-Mex restaurant. I hear one of the new owners is from the popular Scion restaurant located next door. You can see Scion’s menu here. Sounds very promising. I hear they are shooting to open by mid-summer. More info as it becomes available.

Do you think Tex-Mex will do well in this space?

1121 14th St, NW

Great news for fans of Chix DC – they’re opening a 2nd restaurant at 1121 14th St, NW just south of Thomas Circle. The first Chix is located at 2019 11th St, NW just north of U Street.

You can see their menu here. For those not familiar:

“chix is committed to providing natural, healthy, delicious, affordable, quick latin-flavored meals in a casual environment.”

We’ve previously judged the original location here.

The second location at 1121 14th St, NW will be a bit bigger at 2200 square feet. And if all goes according to plan they’ll be open by late Sept./early Oct. 2012.

15th and U St, NW

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that 24 Seven was looking to move from 1408 U St, NW to the former Love Cafe space at the corner of 15th and U St, NW. It’s now official. When the move is made their new name will be Mediterranean.

Also in early April we learned that Utopia had closed for 14 months at 1418 U St, NW. At that time a worker at nearby Stem said that both Stem and DC Noodles would also be closing for a year. I’m happy to report that is no longer the case. The owner of DC Noodles says that they, Stem and nearby Coppi have no plans to close. Additionally, they have 8 more years on their lease at 1410 U St, NW. If anything changes they’ll be sure to let us know on their Facebook page. Hopefully the construction of Louis at 14th won’t be too disruptive for them.

Yesterday afternoon I spoke about how the old post office building on T St, NW was nearly completely demolished except for the facade. We had previously learned that Bakehouse would be moving into one of the retail spaces. Todd Kliman tweets more huge news this morning:

“Taqueria Nacional will be relocating to 1409 T Street NW, the old T St. Post Office — per Johnny Fulchino.”

Taqueria Nacional is currently located at 400 North Capitol St, NW behind Johnny’s Half Shell. They got outstanding reviews when we judged them in Feb. 2012. Sounds like a another great addition for 14th and T St, NW.

Dear PoPville,

My sweetie and I are eloping in a couple of weeks at the DC courthouse, and I’m thinking I’d like to have a romantic dinner, just the two of us, a couple of days before. What are some of the most lovely, quiet settings for a special date night in DC? Extra points for places with some strong vegetarian entrees.

It’s pricey but since this is a very special occasion, I’m voting Blue Duck Tavern. On the cheaper side, I’ve yet to find a place I love as much as the patio of Room 11 (3234 11 St. NW). Where’s your favorite romantic date night spot in town?
