1234 H Street, NE

From Toki’s website:

Toki Underground’s NEW change in hours of operation in effect this week, beginning Monday, September 24, 2012.

Monday thru Wednesday: 5pm – 10pm
Thursday: 5pm – 11pm
Friday – Saturday: 5pm – 12am
Sundays: CLOSED

The major changes to note:

On Thursdays, the kitchen will close at 11pm (previously, 12am).
On Fridays and Saturdays, the kitchen will close at 12am (previously, 2am).
We will be closed every Sunday.

Toki Underground remains committed to providing market-fresh ramen at the highest standards of service and at the lowest cost to our customers on a daily basis. We are choosing to close on Sundays to continue to meet the standards we impose on ourselves here at the restaurant as well as those that we receive from our loyal customers on a regular basis.

However, there is good news to these changes. We are now offering carry out every day that we are open (previously, Monday through Thursday).

We judged Toki in Dec. 2011. Anyone ever try the carryout?

1316 9th Street, NW

A couple of weeks ago we learned about a new restaurant coming to 1316 9th St, NW near the convention center and Seasonal Pantry. They’ve applied for a liquor license under the name Thally and it says:

“New Restaurant. A modern, energetic bistro serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Background music will be provided. Sidewalk Cafe with 10 seats. Occupancy Load of 99.”

Looking forward to seeing the menus! Stay tuned.

Maple is launching Sunday brunch this weekend. Hours are 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The menu is heavy on eggs — our version of an eggs florentine; an Eggs in Purgatory with Italian sausage, tomatoes, onions, peppers and fontina cheese; salted cod and potato cakes topped with sunny-side up eggs. We’ll also have a breakfast antipasti plate, french toast stuffed with apples and dried cherries and served with mascarpone whipped cream, and several of our panini and salads as more lunch items.

We’ll also extend our $2 off Italian beer Sunday special all day — so if anyone likes Italian craft beer with brunch, they can take advantage of that special price.

Maple will continue to be open after brunch but serve antipasti and olives only between 3 and 5, at which point we’re open for dinner.

From a press release:

Daily Grill, specializing in classic American dishes, will soon unveil a newly designed bar set to evoke nostalgia with a modern feel. The revamped location Washingtonians have grown to love will also debut a new happy hour menu designed by Executive Chef Phil Kastel. In honor of the remodel, Daily Grill will offer Happy Hour prices all night through October 5.

The redesign includes an expansion of the drink menu including ten new taps, a $4 handle, premium martinis, and wine specials. New draft selections include: Schlafly Pilsner from Missouri, Brooklyn Oktoberfest from New York, Maryland-made Flying Dog Old Scratch Amber, Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale from Maine, Dogfish Head Midas Touch from Delaware and Kelly’s Irish Cider from Florida.

The updated bar menu will feature $3-5 happy hour specials with new items including:

Pub Burger
Crab Cake BLT
Chicken Sausage & Arugula Lavash
Crispy Naked Wings
Parmesan Truffle Frites
Capitol Dog

For the interior, the restaurant enlisted the help of local architecture and interior design firm Streetsense. The roughly $250,000 remodel will introduce communal tables and comfortable booths along with lighting designed to create a social and intimate vibe. “The downtown DC Daily Grill had one goal in mind for the redesign – keep their loyal guests while bringing in a new generation. The redesign is warm and welcoming to all ages, featuring subtle changes that will significantly enhance the guest’s experience,” Rhena Saar said, a senior project designer. Guests will also enjoy a new surround sound audio system and additional flat screen TVs.

14th and T St, NW

Back in July 2011 we learned that Matchbox would be moving into the former Arena Stage building at the corner of 14th and T St, NW across from St. Ex. The scaffolding has been removed and you can really see the building returning to life:

Lots of progress on the inside too, remember the space was completely gutted:

And this always blows me away, check out what 14th and T Street looked like in 1986. The Matchbox will be going into the building on the corner that has the sign – “All Power to the Imagination”:

709 H St, NE

Back in Sept. 2011 we learned Po Boys Kitchen was coming to 709 H Street, NE. Looks like they’ve changed the name to PoBoy Jim. Their facebook page says:

“Poboy jim will be a cajun creole rustic restaurant that features casual dinning, an extensive bar, and outdoor seating. The ambiance will be rustic and casual; yet the cuisine will be of the highest quality.”
