Maybe Eatmore Chicken will change their name back…

From a press release:

This coming winter, Washingtonians can look forward to the opening of Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, a casual yet refined take on two comfort food classics – fried chicken and doughnuts. Founded by childhood friends Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken will open its first location in Downtown Washington near Metro Center. Pastry Chef Jason Gehring, most recently overseeing the pastry program at Fiola, will helm the kitchen and menu development. Astro plans to serve a rotating variety of doughnuts and fried chicken daily, during the breakfast, lunch and late afternoon rush.

The name Astro was inspired by the desire to provide a stellar product and experience to Washingtonians. In this case, sweet and savory all-American favorites – fried chicken and doughnuts – come together with an inventive and whimsical take on flavors and offerings. Sourcing some of the finest ingredients available, Chef Gehring will offer a variety of doughnuts with familiar flavors like glazed, chocolate and sugar. Customers can also expect nostalgic renditions like peanut butter and jelly, crème brulee, and riffs on iconic desserts like the black and white cookie. “One of my greatest culinary inspirations was my grandmother, and I plan on honoring her fried chicken recipe at Astro, with regular and spicy varieties” said Gehring. Astro is finalizing partners now, but plans to serve premium coffee from artisan roasters.

Combining their culinary and service backgrounds, Gehring and Spaisman will lead the back and front of the house respectively. While opening is expected later this winter, Astro plans on hosting pop-up tastings throughout late fall and early winter.

Astro has been a project in the making for the past three years. Raising funds during a downturn economy, while finding an attractive location that was appropriately ventilated for deep-frying, was a long-standing challenge. “In the early planning stages, we worked with Valerie Hill of Johnny’s Half Shell to help with recipe development,” said Spaisman. “We also looked to long-time friends John Fulchino and Chef Ann Cashion for some very insightful industry advice,” he continued. “Three years later, we’re so happy to have found a great talent in Jason, who has been adding to those first recipes and putting his own personal stamp on the flavor varieties.”

Co-founders, Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern, the first native Washingtonian to play for the Washington Capitals, grew up playing hockey together in Montgomery County, Md. Doughnuts were the reward of choice after games, particularly those from the recently reopened Montgomery Doughnuts. Spaisman, with a long-standing career in antiques, was always a lover of food, having worked at Balducci’s (formerly Sutton Place Gourmet) throughout his high school and college years. He and Halpern both have a passion for food and were inspired by a fond childhood memory, to offer Washingtonians a fun interpretation on two comfort food favorites.

Looks like Haydee’s could be open 24/7 in the near future. A recent liquor license amendment says:

“PROPOSED HOURS OF OPERATION HOURS FOR PREMISES
Monday through Sunday 24hrs/day.

PROPOSED HOURS OF SALES/SERVICE/CONSUMPTION FOR PREMISES
Sunday through Thursday 11:00am – 2:00am, Friday and Saturday 11:00am – 3:00am.”

Like The Coupe in Columbia Heights which is open 24/7, hours of alcohol consumption would not be 24/7. For folks that live in Mt. Pleasant – like the idea of Haydee’s staying open 24/7?

The upper patio of the Poste courtyard has been transformed into a wintery cocktail lounge, complete with seasonal libations, fondue, fire pits and blankets. Lead bartender Jason Wiles has created a selection of seasonal sips that are available exclusively on the patio. Select drinks include: the Smokin’ Bacon Hot Chocolate made with bacon-infused Bulleit bourbon, hot cocoa and a homemade bacon cayenne marshmallow; and the Flip You For Real made with Maker’s Mark, apple cider, caramel and a whole egg. There will also be a selection of dark spirits and fortified wines for sipping. Chef Dennis Marron has created a menu of fondues, soups, and other bar bites available for sharing on the patio. The S’mores Fondue ($14), made with melted milk chocolate with graham crackers and marshmallows makes for a fun twist on traditional s’mores. Also available will be Classic Cheese Fondue ($17), melted comté cheese served with cubed bread, apples and sausage. Guests can also indulge in a classic Dark Chocolate Fondue ($11) served with fruit. Seasonal soups, escargots, mussels, mac and cheese, and selections from the raw bar are also available.

The official launch of the cour de l’hiver will be held on November 3rd from 4pm to 8pm in the courtyard, during which guests can lounge with blankets and heaters and sample $5 specially-priced cocktails from Wiles and complimentary bites from the courtyard menu by Chef Marron with live music from the Joe Chiocca band.

After the jump is the full cour de l’hiver cocktail menu: (more…)

I was lucky enough to be invited to Cause’s opening event and the finished space looks amazing. I was also able to meet some of the organizations who will benefit from Cause’s philanthropy and was, for the first time, realizing how awesome this place really is. I’m betting there will be an Oprah or some national news coverage in the near future if they can pull this off. While I tasted some delicious drinks, I’m eager to go back and try the menu. Wishing them the very best. We will revisit for a proper judging after they’ve been open a bit.

1817 Columbia Rd, NW

Last week I shared some sweet Columbia Rd scuttlebutt about the former home of Evolve, Marrakech Lounge, and briefly Mudbugz at 1817 Columbia Rd, NW. I had heard that the folks from Toki Underground could be opening up in the space. City Paper’s Jessica Sidman found out the restaurant will be called TAAN. Their Website : says

TAAN, a modern Asian noodle shop inspired by traditional izakayas and ramen shops, will be opening up late October.

Executive Chef Jonathan Bisagni has composed a menu that will consist of kushiyaki, onigiri, various small plates, and three types of ramen: pork based, duck based, and vegetarian.

With work stints at Kushi Izakaya and Sushi, Morimoto Waikiki, Sticky Rice (RVA,DC, and Baltimore), and Toki Underground diners can expect a well-executed, young perspective of the Asian dining world.

So I wasn’t totally off :) Looking forward to trying more noodles in Adams Morgan! TAAN will join Sakuramen which opened nearby at 2441 18th St, NW in late May.
