847 Upshur St, NW

Dear PoPville,

My husband and I tried this new restaurant, “Open Kitchen Diner” at 847 Upshur St. NW, just a few doors down from domku. It used to be one of the zillion, tired carry-out places. Now it has been transformed into a super clean, homestyle soul food restaurant with bar seating around the kitchen area and a few tables and chairs. The food is lovingly and carefully prepared–not overcooked. The macaroni and cheese was perfect as were the greens and sweet potatoes. Dinner for two was only $11.00! They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’ve never written to you before or felt the need to recommend a place, but this place deserves our community support!

Back in June I shared some scuttlebutt that District Taco could be moving into the former YES! Organic Market space at 656 Pennsylvania Ave, SE (YES! has moved to Barracks Row.)

The Washington Post now confirms the Capitol Hill location:

“District Taco plans to open its latest operation in the former Yes! Organic Market at 656 Pennsylvania Ave. SE. The owners are aiming for a January/February launch date on their third brick-and-mortar location, following their original taqueria in Arlington and their D.C. debut on F Street NW.”

District Taco opened their 1309 F Street, NW location in the former Funxion space back in May.

A few weeks ago, I noted Lebanese Taverna’s renovations were looking good in Woodley Park. They reopened Sunday night. You can see their menu here.

From a press release:

Upon entering the restaurant, guests will be enveloped in a stylish and spacious lounge area adjacent to a 13-seat bar. Situated at the back of the restaurant is floor-to-ceiling walnut grid wall housing internally lit Arabic lanterns. Behind this featured wall lies the Cedar Private Dining Room, named after the cedar trees of Lebanon. The space accommodates up to 56 guests, providing the perfect setting for business dinners and social gatherings.

Subtle touches of a Lebanese home have been infused throughout the restaurant’s décor. The architectural design includes rich earth tones of copper and brown, natural walnut wood panels, hand-laid country field stone wall accents, and three Egyptian hammered silver brass metal chandeliers hanging from the expansive arcades of the ceiling. Even the communal sinks by the bathrooms mimic a Turkish-style motif.

Much like the establishment, the menu stays true to its traditional roots offering signature items like the hommos — which, as stated in the 2012 Zagat Guide, “will ruin you for all other hummus” — while introducing new entrée options such as Chicken Shawarma Salad (mixed greens topped with feta cheese, olives and a generous portion of rotisserie grilled chicken tossed with Taverna dressing), and Fattoush Shawarma Salad (layers of assorted vegetables, pita chips and a large serving of rotisserie grilled beef and lamb mixed with pomegranate dressing). Other new items include the Chef’s Tasting Platter — a sampling of the nine most popular mezza — and the Halloumi Sandwich Platter, consisting of sautéed sheep’s milk cheese, pickles, olives, mint and a side of fries. All sandwiches, prepared with homemade bread, will now be featured on both the lunch and dinner menus. As always, Lebanese Taverna caters to dietary requests, such as vegetarian, vegan and gluten free.

The DC establishment, which now seats 130 guests, was the catalyst to the growth of the 11-location restaurant collection. Originally opened in 1990, the 22-year-old site was the host to an array of neighbors, guests and dignitaries from around the globe.

According to Dany Abi-Najm, President of Lebanese Taverna Group, “My father (the patriarch of the business) always taught my siblings and me to greet each guest as if they were entering into our home. I look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come.”

Guests are invited to dine at Lebanese Taverna seven days a week. The restaurant will begin serving lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Dinner will be served from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 4 p.m. until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. A Sunday brunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., followed by dinner service from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m.

From a press release:

Beginning Monday, November 5, Napoleon Bistro & Lounge will be opening for lunch, every day of the week, featuring a brand new menu with café fare including salads, sandwiches and crepes. Napoleon’s extensive gourmet coffees & teas menu will also be featured during lunch, including their popular Nutella Espresso, Caramel Espresso and Viennese Espresso (a double espresso shot with cinnamon, vanilla & whipped cream). Napoleon’s lunch will be offered from 11:00am – 3:00pm.

Napoleon’s new lunch menu will stay true to the bistro’s Parisian identity and will offer items such as Tuna Nicoise Salad served with Ahi Tuna, field greens, olives, anchovies, French beans, and mustard vinaigrette, Croque Monseur made with Jam Bone de Bayonne ham, gruyere cheese, sauce béchamel, and served with a cucumber tomato salad, and a Marseille Crepe served with chicken, sour cream, onions, red peppers and red pepper sauce, to name a few.

Desert items include Mousse Au Chocolat (a rich dark chocolate mousse with whip cream), Apple Beignets (golden crispy granny smith apples served with vanilla ice cream and crème angliase), and their well known Last Tango Crepe (nutella chocolate and strawberries served with a berry melba sauce).

1099 New York Avenue, NW

A couple weeks ago a reader shared a tip and a call to the restaurant indicated that Againn Gastropub would be closing after Nov. 3rd at 1099 New York Avenue, NW. Their General Manager and partner, Romeo Santos, emailed me saying they would not be closing. Their Website now says:

“It is with regret that we announce the closure of AGAINN. After weeks of deliberation with our investors we have decided to close. We want to thank the great city of Washington for its support over the last three years. We have been honored to serve all who have come into AGAINN. We will miss all of the wonderful people in this city! Regretfully, Romeo Santos, General Manager/Partner, AGAINN DC”

I emailed Mr. Santos to confirm that they have closed and this time he did confirm the closure.

Thanks to all who sent emails about the update.

1817 Columbia Rd, NW

On Wed. we took a look at the menu and starting at 5pm tonight you can have a taste. From a press release:

TAAN, a modern Asian noodle shop inspired by traditional izakayas and ramen shops, will be opening up in Adams Morgan at 1817 Columbia Rd NW (next door to Cashions and Mintwood Place).

Executive Chef Jonathan Bisagni has composed a menu that will consist of kushiyaki, onigiri, various small plates, and three types of ramen: pork based, duck based, and vegetarian. With work stints at Kushi Izakaya and Sushi, Morimoto Waikiki, Sticky Rice (RVA,DC, and Baltimore), and Toki Underground diners can expect a well-executed, young perspective of the Asian dining world.

TAAN’s grand opening will be this Friday, November 2, 2012.

We’ll revisit for a proper judging when they’ve been open for a few weeks. Looks promising:
