“Dear PoPville,

Anyone with experience dealing with this?

We received two notices stating we violated DC’s recycling rules on two separate dates two months apart resulting in two $75 fines. The problem is that apparently, at some point at least a month and a half ago, our recycling can got swapped and ours ended up way down the alley. Since it has been away, folks have been filling it with whatever they like. The citation states that the only way for us to contest it is to appear in person. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This morning I was awoken by a chainsaw outside my building, by the S street dog park in Dupont, and saw that DC was felling one of the two large trees outside (on the 1800 block of New Hampshire Ave, NW, picture attached). I reached out to the condo building’s property manager and he provided me with this response (screenshot also attached): (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I sold a house and had closing this week. At the last minute DCRA came in and took $45k of the proceeds from me with no explanation. After further investigation it appears that they never cleared up some complaints I had from a tenant several years ago and the fines grew exponentially to $45k even though they never contacted me about it. From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced the immediate acceleration of safety improvement projects that will better protect pedestrians as well as new reforms that will streamline and speed up the completion of safety projects.

“The work to make our roads and sidewalks safer is urgent,” said Mayor Bowser. “In addition to accelerating safety improvement projects citywide, residents deserve a faster process for having dangerous conditions on our roads and sidewalks addressed. We can and will move faster, and implementing a streamlined, less bureaucratic process is the first step in making that happen.”

Beginning this week, DDOT will accelerate roadway and intersection improvements that will enhance pedestrian safety, including the installation of speed humps, stop signs, and right turn hardening measures. DDOT will also install measures that provide visual and concrete reminders to drivers that they must drive responsibly, to include driver feedback signs, high visibility crosswalks, concrete curb extensions, and extended leading pedestrian intervals.

Also, starting now and continuing annually, DDOT will target 100 intersections that are within the District’s high-crash, high-injury corridors. (more…)

From a press release:

“DC Councilmember Charles Allen (Ward 6) is re-introducing his bill that would put a recurring $100 balance to DC resident’s SmarTrip card every month and make a $10 million annual investment in improving bus service and infrastructure in the District.

Metro For DC would create a way for all DC residents to register a SmarTrip card and have it refresh to a $100 balance at the beginning of each month, similar to some employer-paid benefit programs. The balance would never exceed $100, so the District only pays for what a resident uses while riding Metrorail or Metrobus. (more…)
