“Dear PoPville,

Last Wed (Sept 30th) around 11pm, I was getting ready to go to bed when I noticed a man staring through my living room window. I live in an English Basement with bay windows on the north side of Penn Ave on 6th St SE (just a couple of block from Eastern Market). The man actually walked past our gate and was hiding behind a big potted plant in front of the window. The majority of my blinds were closed and I only had the very top opened to let in some light. This is particularly creepy, because you have to get really close to actually be able to see inside, so it wasn’t that he just walked by and saw me, but had to actually come in and move around the plant’s foliage. As soon as he saw that i saw him, he ran out.

I called the cops and they sent an officer who took a report. Unfortunately, there’s not much they could do, but they were really nice and said they would increase patrol in the area and said to keep all blinds closed, especially at night when it’s easier to see inside when the lights are on. I doubted calling them, but they said to please always call when something like this happens. The next day I mentioned it to my next door neighbor and she said the same thing happened to her the week before around the same time. Neither one of us got a good look at his face, but we both noticed he was short, overweight, Hispanic/Latino and wearing a drawstring backpack.

Sending this out to warn anyone else living in this area of the Hill, since he’s clearly done this more than once. If you see him, please call the cops and make a report so they can increase patrol and hopefully catch the creep!”

A reader reports:

“unfortunately, you can add another crime to this mini-wave. My house near 8th and T NW was broken into last Thursday, just after I left for work. Intruder(s) broke in through my kitchen window, which faces the back alley. They stole a laptop, two iPads, my TV, a bunch of cash and, yes, my car keys (off my kitchen counter) and my car, which was parked in the alley behind the house. I’m offering $1,000 for any information that leads to the recovery of the car, a 2003 black Jeep Liberty with DC tags EN0349. Even more, I’d like to see these guys apprehended. Would urge everybody in north Shaw to be extra cautious.

Please contact 202/ 441-2909 with any info.”

From an understandably frustrated email:

“The thieves in our neighborhood are getting more brazen. Yesterday, just before 12:30 PM, thieves kicked in our front door (Decatur Street near Sherman Circle). Luckily our alarm went off quickly, scaring them off before they took too much and alerting us and MPD quickly. Our family and pets are ok, but they made off with some laptops and one of our cars (keys were on the kitchen counter…).

If you see a silver 2 door Mini Cooper, DC plate DX9945, I’d appreciate if you call 911 and let them know – I love that little car.

This is the 2nd break in for us in three years. I know we keep getting told that crime is dropping, things are safer….but really? Kicking down the FRONT DOOR in the middle of the day?

I don’t even know anymore.”

Ed. Note: Last week we also heard about another burglar who stole a car.

A reader reports Saturday night from the U Street metro station:

“I was just waiting for a train around 6 when a fight broke out and one of the guys was thrown on the tracks. He got up and it looked like WMATA delayed the train to make sure it was clear. No one seemed to do anything other than clean up the blood. It looks like both guys ran out the 10th St exit.”

Sadly seems like just another Saturday Night in the District these days.

UPDATE from WMATA:

“I wanted to let you know that there was more going on than just cleaning. MTPD took the suspect involved in this incident into custody in the area of Sherman Ave and Euclid St NW. He was transported back to U Street Station where he was positively identified by the victim. Arrested, charged with simple assault. Both parties involved in the fight were checked by medics — neither required transport.

Suspect is 20yo male, resident of NW DC.”
