A reader passes on from St. Stephen & the Incarnation Episcopal Church:
“In the early morning hours of Monday, January 30, someone broke into St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church and stole our safe. The safe contained the proceeds from a benefit concert for our Loaves and Fishes hot meals program. The program serves hundreds of meals each weekend for homeless and low-income people in Columbia Heights, and has for the past 50 years. Loaves and Fishes relies on donations to fund its operations and was counting on that money.
Video surveillance and other evidence suggests that this was a targeted, well-planned theft, not a crime of opportunity. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
For the second time in less than a week a delivery man was robbed on my porch by an armed man.
What the suspect is doing is calling for delivery from local restaurants (Olga & Manny, NY Pizza) and giving them the address of [unit block of] W Street NW (last Sunday robbery) and [unit block of] W Street NW (tonight’s robbery), when the delivery person shows up for the delivery, no one answers the number that called for the delivery. So the delivery person leaves the car and proceeds to knock on the door of the address. At that time the suspect comes from the corner of North Capital and W street and robs the delivery person at gunpoint.
Myself and my neighbor never called for delivery…. the suspect is giving an address and then robbing people when they arrive.
The police said this is the 5th time it has happened (more…)

A reader reported around 6:30pm Monday night:
“About 10 shots fired. They hit two homes. Street blocked off between Gallatin and Farragut”
MPD reported:
“At approximately 1823 hours, the 4th District received a call for the sounds of gunshots in the 5000 b/o 5th Street N.W.
Upon MPD arrival, members discovered shell casings on the street and one on the front porch of a house in the 5000 b/o 5th Street N.W. A closer examination of the shell casings revealed that the shells in the street were a different caliber from the shell casing located on the front porch.
Members also discovered that three house sustained minor damage as a result of the shots being fired. (1 window and drain gutters)
4th District members canvassed the area for witnesses and learned that a group of individuals were sitting on the front porch of the house in the 5000 b/o 5th Street N.W. One of the individuals on the porch, who also lives at the location, was identified. While this individual and his friends were on the porch, another male or group of males approached on foot. Words were exchanged and shots were fired.
We believe at this time that an individual on the porch exchanged gun fire with the individual(s) on the street due to the location of the shell casings found and different calibers.
Detectives are interviewing the person on the porch who lives at the location at this time. The individual is being very uncooperative.
Detectives are in the process of obtaining a search warrant to check the inside of the location for one of the weapons involved in this incident.”
