“MPD Drone Flight Notification: MPD is conducting an authorized drone flight for a critical missing person in the area of the 4300 block of 13th Street, NW.”

Some background from MPD:

“The Metropolitan Police Department launched its Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Program in June 2024 for situations where “eyes in the sky” will be critical to ensure a safe resolution for all.

MPD joins over 1,500 police departments across the country that use UAS — also known as drones — to aid officers in real time.

The program’s procedures are specified in MPD’s General Order 803.09.

Uses and Parameters

MPD uses drones to support only those operations cited in the General Order, including help with:

Searching for missing persons
Major traffic crash reconstruction
Crowd management for large-scale gatherings
Situational and tactical purposes (such as a barricade)

Drones operated by MPD are subject to specific operational limitations.

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting in Northwest.

On Friday, October 25, 2024, at approximately 5:47 p.m., an officer of the Fourth District was patrolling in the 3700 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest, when they heard the sounds of gunshots. The officer responded to the 800 block of Quincy Street, Northwest, and located an adult male, unconscious and not breathing, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. (more…)
