Around 11:30pm Jill asked:

“what’s up with the circling helicopter near Potomac Ave Metro?”

From MPD:

“Illegal Firearm Recovered and Arrest Made in Potomac Gardens

Just wanted to take a minute to make everyone aware that last night Officers Branson and Tyson were working as part of our enhanced deployment in the PSA 106 and the Potomac Gardens area. While responding to backup a DC Housing Police Officer looking for a wanted subject, they observed an individual inside Potomac Gardens attempting to stash a handgun. After a brief foot chase, Officers Branson and Tyson stopped the individual without incident and recovered a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm handgun from their person. Our officers are working hard to take illegal firearms off your neighborhood streets, so I wanted to take a moment to share this success with everyone. Have a great day!”

5th and L Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I heard there was a shooting at the Safeway on L St in City Vista (490 L St NW). Late Saturday night [9:33pm], my roommate’s boyfriend came back to our place and told us he walked in immediately after it happened– said there was a heavy police presence. I also heard that the emergency exit was blocked by pallets while the shooting went down. Have you received any information?”

I inquired with MPD who replied:

“There was a negligent discharge by an SPO [Special Police Officer] working at that location in an attempt to detain a shoplifting suspect. The SPO sustained a non-life threatening self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Ed. Note: The suspected shoplifter was able to flee the store in the aftermath.

“1) how long do you think it takes to strip a car of all four wheels, both front headlights, and all Cadillac insignia?
2) where the hell are the police during something obviously took longer than just a minute or two?!?”
