“Dear PoPville,

There was a hit and run that happened last night at approximately 9:55 PM at the intersection of R ST NW and 6th ST NW. I was about to cross 6th street, standing on R when I saw a cyclist (who had a green light) crossing 6th street in the bike lane on R St. At the same time, a speeding car driver turning left from Rhode Island Ave NW ran the red light and T-boned the cyclist at the intersection, sending him and his bike flying. The car driver decelerated for a few seconds, and sped away on 6th street heading south. (more…)

Interesting question from a resident on the MPD 3D listserv:

“I ask this with zero judgement, just pure curiosity. How it is possible that a person be arrested for two separate crimes [Unlawful Entry Of A Motor Vehicle] at two separate locations four hours apart? Is this reflective of one arrest for two separate crimes or was this person arrested, released, and arrested again?”

MPD replied:

“You are exactly right. He was arrested on Georgia Avenue, transported to the Third District, processed and released on a citation to appear. He then committed the same crime on V street and was arrested again.

He committed 2 crimes in different locations within a few hours.”

Statement from the Family of Berner “Bud” Johnson (July 27, 1970 – May 19, 2019):

“This past Sunday, we said goodbye to our beloved husband, father, brother, son and friend Bud. He was alone when he was assaulted and viciously beaten by a group of men outside his favorite neighborhood restaurant on Wednesday, May 15. We made the incredibly difficult decision to remove him from life support four days later. His sudden departure from our lives and the violent way in which it occurred leaves a hole in our hearts that will never be filled.

Bud had a big heart. He was a great family man and loved nothing more than spending time with his wife and children. At home, at work and with friends, he always put the concerns of others before his own.

As a result, Bud had an extensive and loving network of friends in the Senate, on his softball team, his son’s Little League baseball team and throughout the Washington, DC, community. Bud loved his neighborhood, which he and Diane moved into nine years ago seeking a change in their lifestyle. Along with their son Bo, they have lived in and around the DC community and became a part of it.

The family wishes to thank the first responders from both the Metropolitan Police Department and the DC Fire and EMS Department who tended to Bud immediately following his assault. Because of their efforts and success in reviving Bud, dozens of family members and friends were able to say goodbye to Bud before he passed.
The family is also grateful to the staff at MedStar Washington Hospital Center who cared for Bud, keeping him comfortable during his final days while accommodating the constant stream of visitors who filled the halls outside the ICU. (more…)

Thanks to all who’ve been emailing updates about this tragic event.

From GoFundMe:

“With heavy hearts, we said goodbye to Bud on Sunday as he finally succumbed to the injuries he received when assaulted by a group of individuals just outside where he lived in Washington DC. He was never alone as we were there in spirit until the end. His organs have gone to a good cause and are helping at least two others live.

Many have asked if they could donate money to help Diane and the family. As a result, we have started this fund for those who wish to contribute. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Fight on Greenline 5/22 10:30AM

I was traveling on the Green Ling towards Branch Ave. At L’Enfant Plaza stop there was a lot of screaming and yelling. There looked to be 4-6 teen boys jumping a teen girl. An older gentlemen jumped in to protect her and then the teens jumped him. He was down on the floor being kicked and punched, with bystanders calling for police, trying to get the kids off, etc. I was trying to record for a police report and one of the teens pushed me and in the scuffle ended up hitting me in the cheek/chin.

I ended up boarding the train with the girl and the man, still with no response from police. I called 911 (having had poor experiences with WMATA police in the past) but they explained since it happened on Metro it had to be taken care of through them–she then routed me to their dispatch who was beyond rude, explained to me that this had already been called in several times and there was a procedure to be followed. When I pressed about how I could submit photos/video and file my own police report since I was hit she told me that was not an option and hung up. (more…)
