A reader reports:

“Thought I would share some recent bicycle thefts I’ve witnessed over the past 2 weeks. Both instances occurred on N street nw (in front of Espita). First on 8/31 @ 5:03pm and the second on 9/9 at 9:07am. Both times they used an angle grider to cut locks. I have heard the angle grinder on other days, but didn’t think much of it, but I am sure the same was happening. Police were called on both occasions, but seems there is not much that can be done.

Just a warning to be aware if parking a bike in this area.”

5th and N Street, NW

Multiple readers have reported about this unsettling situation the last few days (and weeks.) You can follow @PoPville on twitter if interested in getting the real time reports. From Sunday night and Monday night:

“I was walking by N and 5th St NW and heard 20-25 gunshots/fireworks. Anyone else hear or see anything?”

“another round, in the exact same@ spot as last night at least 20 shots on the street. Sirens approaching, happened about 2 minutes ago. Any news??”

“Gunshots. Cops are on site now and chopper is circling. Second shooting at 5th & N this week – other was Thursday night”

ANC Rep Rachelle Nigro wrote on IG: “6E04! Update on the shots fired on the 400 block of N St. The detectives are still on the scene. Bullets went into homes across from the Cooperative and into cars. Again luckily no one was injured or killed.”

Another reader reports via email:

“The last two nights have seen drive-by shootings into a housing complex’s parking lot. Given how many shots were fired (maybe 18 tonight, more than (dozens?) last night, it’s a miracle that apparently no one was hurt – last night there was a Labor Day weekend barbecue taking place right next to the crime scene but people were able to scramble to safety (at least the ones who didn’t – according to my neighbors – run after the getaway car yelling at the perpetrators!)

“Another day another shooting near my house in Columbia Heights. 4-5 shots fired around 3:23 PM near 14th & Euclid or 14th & Fairmont.

Update 1pm: The Body Worn Camera footage can be seen here (warning graphic.)

The Washington Post reported:

“Two city officials who viewed police body camera video of the incident said at least two officers approached a vehicle in a parking lot and a foot chase began. As one officer ran past the vehicle, the officials said the footage shows Kay pulling a gun from his waist. The officials said the officer fired, appearing to strike Kay in the chest.

City officials said they plan to publicly release the body camera footage as soon as Thursday.

Some people near the shooting scene questioned the police account. On Wednesday night, a few dozen demonstrators, including some of Kay’s family members, converged at the 7th District police station.”

WTOP reported this morning:

“Protesters took to the streets in Washington, D.C., Thursday morning, calling for change in the wake of a teen shot and killed by police Wednesday afternoon in Southeast.

About a dozen protesters gathered outside the mayor’s house chanting “no justice, no peace” with police nearby.”

From MPD:

“Agents from the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, in the 200 block of Orange Street, Southeast.

At approximately 3:51 pm, uniformed patrol officers of the Seventh District responded to the listed location to investigate a man with a gun. Upon arrival, officers encountered individuals in and around a vehicle. Upon seeing the officers, two of the suspects fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, one of the suspects brandished a firearm. In response, an officer discharged their firearm one time, striking the suspect.
