Heurich’s Lager Launch Party
Heurich House Museum
Monday, August 12, 2013 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Just as most DC residents are closely acquainted with DC Brau today, there was a time in recent history when many Washingtonians knew of Christian Heurich, his successful Foggy Bottom brewery, and his iconic mansion below Dupont Circle. The last time anyone tasted a Heurich beer was 1956, the year his brewery closed and made way for the Kennedy Center. The Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. had been the District’s last production brewery, and no others existed in the city until DC Brau opened in 2011. Heurich’s legacy survives at his former mansion, the Heurich House Museum, which today displays the Heurich family’s original furnishings and decorations, as well as the home’s original state-of-the-art technology. The YES! Organic Market at Georgia and Taylor St, NW in Petworth started selling growlers over the weekend. Anyone know if the other YES! stores are selling growlers? It’s a nice selection:

Though one reader though is concerned with the prices. He writes:

“Has anyone been questioning the proposed outrageous cost of growler sales at Yes! on Taylor and GA ave. 64 oz (8 ounces less than a six pack) is sometimes 70-100% more expensive. Seems ridiculous. Or am I missing something?”

From a press release:

DGS Delicatessen and DC Brau will collaborate on a new summer beer, the “Golden Calf.” The Belgium IPA will blend DC Brau’s Yonder Cities and DGS’s slivovitz plum mash. Slivovitz is a plum brandy with a rich history in Eastern Europe that DGS Beverage Director Brian Zipin crafts in the restaurant. Yonder Cities has a bright juicy grapefruit candy palate that is animated by the richness of the spiced plums. DGS Delicatessen partner Nick Wiseman says, “We are super excited to work with the guys at DC Brau. What could be better than putting beer and slivovitz together?”

The release party will take place on June 27th at DGS from 8-‐11pm (1317 Connecticut Avenue NW), during which there will be a celebratory tapping of the Golden Calf firkin. To complement the collaborative beer, Chef Barry Koslow has crafted a special food menu for the evening, including all beef hot dogs topped with DGS pastrami chili and DC Brau beer mustard alongside half sour pickles fermented in a Catoctin Creek whiskey barrel.

Back in March we learned the Right Proper Brew Pub has leased the space next to the Howard Theatre in Shaw. At that time they were still fundraising and explained:

We want to create a neighborhood gathering place that makes and serves well-priced delicious food and amazing fresh beer; we want to help our neighborhood thrive by investing in the community and its residents; and we want to anchor Washington, DC on the map as a destination for craft beer.

The liquor license application says:

Full Service Tavern with a Brew Pub serving Pub Fair and house made beer with a full service food menu in a family friendly environment.

The seating capacity is 115 with a total occupancy of 155. They hope to be open Monday through Sunday 11:30 am – 1:00 am.

From a press release:

On Tuesday, June 11th, The Red Hen will tap its first keg of “Sailing the Seas of Lees,” a limited release draft beer made in partnership with DC Brau Brewing Company and Linden Vineyards.

Sebastian Zutant, co-owner and beverage director for The Red Hen worked with long-time friends Brandon Skall and Jeff Hancock of DC Brau to create a unique, farmhouse ale, aged for six weeks in oak barrels provided by Winemaker Jim Law of Linden Vineyards in Linden, VA.

“I’ve known Brandon and Jeff for a long time, and have been a huge fan of their beers. It was only a matter of time until we’d find a way to work together,” says Zutant. “Given my predilection towards wine, I thought it would be interesting to find a role for it in the beer making process. Jim Law at Linden has been a trendsetter for Virginia winemaking and we knew he’d be a natural fit; we were all excited to see how a local wine/beer collaboration would turn out.”

As part of the experiment, they aged the brew over Law’s hardscrabble Sauvignon Blanc lees. The result is a juicy, citrus-flavored Saison with a minerality that resembles a cider, or dry white wine.

The limited release “Sailing the Seas of Lees” will be available at The Red Hen beginning June 11th for $7 per glass, and will be offered until all eight sixtels of the brew are gone.
