Really, hopefully temporary sad news, from the really good people at Boundary Stone:

“Since March we have fought to be here for our employees and our neighborhood, which we have faithfully served for the past nine years. Thank you to everyone who has supported Boundary Stone and have been so generous to our staff. It truly has been impactful and has allowed us to delay having to write something like this for the last 8 months. Unfortunately with colder weather moving in, rising virus counts, and no relief on the horizon, we have made the truly agonizing decision to close Boundary Stone until further notice.

We will remain open until Wed Nov 25th when we will celebrate our 10th annual Thanksgiving tradition and end this epic run with our showing of The Last Waltz. We cannot predict what the future holds for gathering places like Boundary Stone, but we are hopeful that we will be welcoming you all again at some point. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’d like to hear if folks know of bars/restaurants that will be showing election returns on Nov 3. I’ve looked online but nothing much comes up. Four years ago I watched at Red Derby and have fond memories of the experience (despite the outcome of the election). I hope that there are opportunities to come together to watch the drama unfold, despite COVID realities.”

Ed. Note: Could be some good overlap for our recent discussions on where to watch sports and where to go while staying warm outside. And of course, I second and recommend, always, Red Derby.

“Dear PoPville,

my son is going to start day care on Friday before my wife goes back to work on Monday. I’ve taken the day off so we can sort of ease each other’s nerves. Now, in ordinary times, we would pull on some non-sweat pants, go somewhere to have a few drinks, and have a conversation uninterrupted by silly dancing, noise-making, book-reading, and other means of keeping a baby entertained that usually define our days. But there’s a pandemic on and the weather is going to be unpleasant on Friday. Does anyone know of a place where we can safely pass some time, preferably with a bar, preferably outdoors, preferably out of the rain, and preferably in the vicinity of a space heater? (high of 54 on Friday…)

We’d be grateful for any guidance the community could offer.”

Ed. Note: They buried the lede – “In December, the team will also introduce a new gin bar, The Wells, adjacent to the two restaurants.”

From a press release:

“Capitol Hill will soon be home to two new restaurants located at 7th and C Streets SE. These dining concepts, just blocks from the nation’s capital and across from Eastern Market, bring new excitement to Washington with community-focused hospitality and a celebration of the flavors, details and moments that bring people together and provide comfort at home.

First to open will be The Duck & The Peach (300 7th Street SE). (more…)

The Blaguard shared on Tuesday: “BLAG IS 10 YEARS OLD TODAY!!!
That’s a long time, a really long time!
We’ve shared the best of times with y’all and look forward to making new forever memories in the future
We would be having the most epic party, but 2020 stinks
Stay tuned this week for more anniversary information, trust it will be fun anniversary week/month!”

An awesome feat – congrats and here’s to many more!! Check out the menus for this great spot.

There is now a liquor license placard for ‘The Lounge’ at the former Eighteenth Street Lounge space:

“A new Retailer’s Class C Nightclub with a seating capacity of 499 and Total Occupancy Load of 499. Summer Garden with 37 seats.”

Seems aspirational at the moment but definitely looking forward to learning more.

In June Eighteenth Street Lounge announced it would be closing after 25 years.

STAY TUNED.

Thanks to Joel for passing on from Wisdom:

“Friends, patrons, and gin heads-

it is with profound gratitude that I announce that Wisdom’s closing its doors after exactly 12 years of business.

In 2003, I developed a dream-that quickly became an obsession – of opening a neighborhood cocktail lounge. The cocktail resurgence was in its infancy and at the time there were very few resources to learn about the craft. That challenge was part of the appeal. I spent a lot of time and energy researching and experimenting with flavors and recipes. After years of military service, I found a city and neighborhood to plant my feet and finally take a leap of faith.

In October 2008, I opened Wisdom – DC’s first cocktail bar. It was an uphill battle on many fronts. I opened an upscale cocktail bar in an underdeveloped part of Pennsylvania Ave SE during a recession, with a culture that had little knowledge of cocktails, and in a city that I knew almost no one in. Some would call that foolish and others would call it brave; I suppose the truth is somewhere in the middle. Chasing this dream sparked passion and purpose, which stoked the fire of persistence. We always had to fight for our customers and could never take them for granted. That is probably what made the bar so special. (more…)
