Every year we do a post around this time to remember the restaurants/bars/retail that have closed over the last 12 months. It is an awful post and I hate doing it but I do it to remember what/who we have lost. Now, is not the time for such a post. We know tons of spots have closed. I post them every single day. It is still, sadly, fresh. We are in the middle of a battle, we shall mourn the lost when the war is over. But for now – we must focus our attention on those fighting to survive the awfulness that has been 2020. Which by the by does not magically end as the calendar flips to 2021, obviously. So let us take this opportunity to call out the local restaurants/bars/retail fighting to survive who could use all of our support. (more…)

Back in July we learned that Solly’s would return to their original size. Now we know what’s becoming of the former expanded space – A liquor license placard for DNA Lounge says:

“A new Retailer’s Class C Tavern with a seating capacity of 30 and Total Occupancy Load of 30. Applicant requests an Entertainment Endorsement with a Dance Floor to provide live entertainment.” (more…)

Solly’s, one of the very, very best bars in D.C. posts this morning:

“Soooo. Solly’s will close at 10pm 12/24 until March. We appreciate everyone’s support and look forward to returning. Please stop in for a laugh and a Powers before then. We will be posting ways to help support our staff during the shutdown so stay tuned.”

Ed. Note: I will update this post with ways to support the staff too.

Lots of folks have passed on the request from Across the Pond:

“The COVID Roller Coaster Continues…

For the past nine months, our goal has been to hang on until next spring. The return of conferences, sports and tourists, along with promising news on vaccines, gave us hope.

But like so many other DC restaurants, we’re a bit worried. Recent spikes have impacted on-premise dining; cold weather is hampering outdoor dining; some of our local customers have temporarily relocated; or in some cases, just aren’t aware that we’re open.

We are lucky, we have very understanding landlords, they want to see us hang on…and that makes us want to keep going. For them, for our customers, for our staff and for us…we’ve given all we’ve had.

So if you’re in any position to help, here are some suggestions: (more…)
