The Washington Post’s Mike Debonis tweeted about the Mayor’s proposed budget:

“New revenue initiatives include ‘expanded sales hours for alcoholic beverages’ ($5.3M) — told sales will be allowed till 4 a.m.”

and a little more detail:

“Gray budget proposal on bars: Weekday close at 3 a.m.; weekend close at 4 a.m. Allow liquor stores to open 7 a.m.”

Good idea for raising revenues?

What can I say – I’m a Coolio fan! Though I gotta be honest, I can’t believe there is such a thing as a 90s party. I must be getting old…

From a press release:

DC celebrity-favorite Eden will be throwing their monthly 90’s themed soiree on Saturday, March 31st with special host rap legend Artis Leon Ivey Jr. aka. Coolio. Most famous for his song “Gangsta’s Paradise” from the film Dangerous Minds, the 90’s headliner will be mingling with Eden partygoers decked out in flannels, jean jackets, Dr. Martens and other gear from the famous decade.

This March, Washingtonians will be taken on Coolio’s “fantastic voyage” to the magical last decade of the 20th century. Club-goers are encouraged to dress in 90’s apparel, so the usual dress code at Eden will be lifted for one magical night. Eden is located at 1716 I Street NW Washington, D.C. For table or reservation, visit www.edendc.com or call 202.403.4343. Doors open at 10pm and the event is ages 21+.

For those who like the vision of All Souls neighborhood bar and restaurant hoping to come to the vacant space at 725 T St, NW, you can show your support this Wed. The folks at All Souls are trying to be good neighbors and have made many concessions including removing the outdoor patio and agreeing not to open until 5pm during the week.

If your schedule is flexible and you think All Souls will be a great addition to the neighborhood you can show your support:

With such beautiful weather and new bars and restaurants popping up every week I gotta ask about outdoor dining and drinking. Back in July 2008 we touched upon some good roof decks in the city but we are way past due for an update.

I’m voting Red Derby’s roof deck and Room 11’s patio. But I also love waterfront areas so I have to put in a vote for Cantina Marina at the SW Waterfront and Tony and Joes in Georgetown (hopefully the Georgetown waterfront dining areas damaged by the floods will get fixed soon.) I’m also super eager to see how the Fairgrounds taking over the old bullpen bars by Nats Park turns out. Of course I also like the veranda at Veranda and I think the roof deck coming to the Brixton is gonna be awesome. Hmm, I guess this is a tougher question than I thought.

Nevertheless, for this week’s FQotD – Where is your favorite roof deck and/or patio in the city? Any new(ish) bars/restaurants have a particularly good outdoor space? Any other ones you think are particularly promising?

In March 2011 we learned that a new bar and restaurant called Mad Momos was coming to 3605 14th St, NW (at Perry Place.) Late last week I took a quick tour to see how things were shaping up. Holy cow. This is a serious renovation. While they’re keeping some historical details, the house was built around 1910/20, this is a near complete gut job.

First floor

If their vision is realized this place has the potential to be absolutely amazing. There is going to be a small patio out front and dining on the first floor. While the second floor will lead to a lounge and outdoor beer garden!

Second floor

I can’t wait to show the after pictures. It’s hard to believe but if all goes well they are aiming for a June opening. But we’ll revisit before then with more details as construction progresses.

Did I mention the outdoor beer garden?
