A commenter requested we start a thread on the best Happy Hour specials in DC. Another writes via email:

“Are there any good spots that serve happy hour on the weekend (other than brunch specials)?”

Mandu, pictured above from Dupont but also on K St, NW in Mt. Vernon Square has a pretty good one (bonus for 7 days a week.) Where are your favorite spots? Weekend favorites?

From a press release:

“The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (Board) suspended Heritage India/The Zanzibar’s liquor license today as the result of an incident that occurred at the establishment on Saturday, Jan. 3 where a patron was stabbed.

The Board found that the establishment—located at 1901 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW—presents an imminent danger to the health and safety of the public. As a result of the Board’s decision, Heritage India/The Zanzibar is prohibited from selling and serving alcoholic beverages. The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) provided the establishment with a formal notice this evening informing them of the suspension.

The Board made its decision after reviewing a thorough investigation conducted by ABRA of the incident. Heritage India/The Zanzibar has remained closed since 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 under the authority of Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy L. Lanier.”

Ed. Note: Heritage India’s former Dupont location was the scene of a shooting on Nov. 27th 2011.

“Dear PoPville,

The Pitch: Awesome Addition to Petworth

This restaurant/bar is a great addition to the neighborhood. I had the shrimp and jerk chicken tacos tonight, which were really good. The beer was fresh and tasty, and the owners and manager were friendly and welcoming. Great atmosphere and this place definitely deserves a shout out.”

Ed. Note: I gave them some love last week. Here’s a look inside:

319 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE

From a press release:

“Washington, DC’s Capitol Hill neighborhood will soon have a new destination for classic American cocktails and cuisine, with the early 2015 opening of Stanton & Greene at 319 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE.

Spanning three floors of a meticulously restored building just two blocks from the US Capitol and Supreme Court, the 180-seat Stanton & Greene will evoke the easy elegance of the Capital city’s bars of the early- to mid- 20th century.

The ground floor is home to a traditional American bar and brasserie with period details: a classic thick-edged marble bar top, handmade brass sconces, a custom-milled oak bar rail, hand-stitched cognac leather booths, the original tin ceiling pattern, honed tobacco-colored floor tile, and vintage crackled porcelain wall tiles. The bar and restaurant will be open seven days a week for lunch, dinner, brunch, and drinks.

Quite the transformation from Pour House

A restored oak staircase leads to the second floor, revealing a soaring 16-foot space with original skylights, an Art-Deco bar beautifully hewn by hand from American ash, and three huge windows overlooking historic Pennsylvania Avenue. The second floor bar and lounge will be open to the public and also available for private events. Like its downstairs counterpart, the upstairs bar will offer a classic cocktail menu and draught local craft beers.

August Paro, a film set designer by trade and co-founder of Beuchert’s Saloon at Eastern Market, has led the design and renovation of Stanton & Greene, carefully sourcing, and re-creating fixtures true to the period and refining art finishes by hand. Every aspect of the restaurant has received extensive attention to detail to evoke the feel of a bygone era.

“For us, it’s about the intangibles that make up the soul of a restaurant; how all the restored and found pieces interact to create what you feel,” says Paro. “The highest compliment I can think of might be someone walking in the first time and saying it feels like it’s been here since Lyndon Johnson was twisting arms on the Hill as a Congressman.”

The restaurant’s name is both a tribute and a play on a century-old living arrangement between two of Capitol Hill’s oldest and closest neighbors: in the center of nearby Stanton Park, named for Lincoln’s Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, sits a statue of American revolutionary war hero General Nathanael Greene.

“The inspiration for the name comes from these two American figures who are linked across the centuries in the park as close neighbors,” says Eli Hengst. “It’s the kind of historical footnote that’s unique to Capitol Hill and D.C. and we hope Stanton & Greene evokes the same sense of place.”

The focus of Stanton & Greene is cocktails and a carefully-curated spirits list – and, while seasonal and artisanal specials will be available, the founders’ aim is a simple, elegant, and classic cocktail menu. (more…)

Since the the change in ownership at Pharmacy Bar back in early May we haven’t heard many updates besides a possible name change. Now a reader hears they are closing for good. On their facebook page they posted yesterday morning:

“Sometime within the last 24 hours somebody decided it was a good idea to steal the vinyl Pharmacy Bar that hung outside the window of the bar.

Whoever that person was I guess felt they were entitled to take it because they heard about the Closing Party we’re having. The problem is, one of our regular customers — who also happens to have been a frequent customer of original Pharmacy Bar owner Kristaps Kreslin’s bar of the same name in Latvia — has been asking for that sign for months.

So if anyone hears, sees or knows anything about the missing sign we would greatly appreciate whatever information you may have. And to the person(s) responsible: if you return it we promise not to press charges.”

The ups and downs continue at Uptown Tap House in Cleveland Park (RIP 4Ps). I had heard rumors that they’d be closing after New Years but their facebook and website are still active so I thought it might be false but last night a reader sends an update from RuninDC:

“Uptown will be closed until the fall while new management takes over and a new menu will be created.”

Back in June 2014 we were shocked to learn Tonic would be closing after a 10 year run in Mount Pleasant. The next day we learned that Goodall’s Bistro would be taking over the space. Plans were for “a seasonally rotating menu of the freshest foods from locally sourced organic farms, and free range ranches in the Mid-Atlantic region”. I’ve been getting tons of emails asking for an update. Not sure if they are raising funds, getting permits in order or what but there has been zero visible progress except that Amuse-o-matic wants their stuff back…

Your prayers have been answered. Well some of your prayers have been answered. Let me rephrase, my prayers have been answered. We first heard about The Pitch back in May but the liquor license placard language was way off (not to be a Jazz Lounge) this is going to be a real deal sports bar. And for my fellow soccer fans, there is a huge international component. Hours will be Sun.-Thurs. 4pm-12am and Fri.-Sat. 4pm – 2am with happy hour 4-7pm Mon.-Fri.

I stopped in for a chat with the owner and general manager. You’ll just have to trust me on this until you get to check it out for yourself – this place is the real deal. There are two levels with flat screen tvs and a projector for big games/matches. In addition to all DC sports teams they’ll be a huge “destination for international sports” including Premier League and La Liga soccer matches as well as cricket and rugby.

Co-owner Jay Narain says:

We have created a venue that appeals to a diverse crowd, including families, sports fans and most importantly the resident of the Petworth community, both old and new. Like our neighborhood, our menu is a little Caribbean meets Southern comfort, meets Americana; together that creates some damn good food. Who doesn’t want that?

Hell freaking yes!!! And for real the guy is a down to earth honest to goodness good guy.

IMG_4018

Oh yeah they have a sweet roof deck (and in the spring will have a nice back patio too):

And here’s some more info from the owners plus some sweet photos they had hanging on the walls as a taste of what’s to come (more…)
