McFadden’s
2401 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

From ABRA:

“The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (Board) unanimously decided today to suspend McFadden’s alcoholic beverage license after it found the establishment presents an imminent danger to the health and safety of the public.

As a result, the establishment is prohibited from selling and serving alcoholic beverages. The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) served McFadden’s—located at 2401 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW—with a written notice this evening informing them of the suspension.

The Board made its decision after reviewing a thorough investigation conducted by ABRA of a violent incident that occurred on Saturday, December 27 where five people were stabbed inside of the establishment. McFadden’s has remained closed since 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 27 under the authority of Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy L. Lanier.

Complete details of the Board’s decision can be reviewed in the Notice of Summary Suspension available on ABRA’s website.”

First we heard about the Ping Pong club and bar opening in February and now more good news for Georgia Ave – Union Drinkery. A liquor license placard posted out front says:

“New neighborhood restaurant/lounge offering light snacks and recorded music. No nude performances. Total Occupancy Load of 97 with seating for 86 inside the premises. Summer Garden with seating for 63.”

Back in August I had heard some scuttlebutt that this could become a high end fried chicken pop up but I’m not sure if that is still a plan but the most recent scuttlebutt I heard about this project – it could be coming from the same folks behind Sundevich in Shaw. Could be BBQ too. Stay tuned…

A serious end of an era from the Washington Post:

“Papageorge, the man crooning folk tunes from a platform by the bar at Kelly’s Irish Times, first sat in that spot nearly three decades ago. Outside, Ronald Reagan was in the White House and Marion Barry was the mayor. Nearby Union Station, which had reportedly featured cigarette burns on its carpets and toadstools growing in its corners, was closed for refurbishment.

Inside, Papageorge played “Sweet Caroline” and “Take Me Home, Country Roads” to soppy Friday night crowds — they’d sing along, enthused and off-key.”

So many good blurry memories…

On Monday I was overjoyed to share an update about Colony Club, “coffee shop, bar and ping pong club”, coming to the former Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine space by Georgia and Kenyon St, NW. I was able to get in touch with the owners who say if all goes well they should be able to open by early February. I was curious about the ping pong aspect and they share:

“We’ll probably just have one indoor table to start (space is tight!). We’re going to have a professional caliber table (probably from Joola) and gear. We’ll have a system for reserving the table, certain times will be open play, and we’ll host tournaments and a league. In keeping with everything we’re doing, we welcome people to take it as seriously (or not) as they want.”

Lots more updates as they get closer to opening.
