The liquor license placard says:

“New Class D Restaurant. Total Occupancy Load of 99. Sidewalk Café with 12 Seats”

Washington CityPaper reported:

“The former Popeyes on 14th Street NW in Logan Circle is being converted into a sushi restaurant called Hando-Medo that will focus on the hand roll (temaki) style of sushi. It’s from Chef/Owner Jin K. Oh who also owns Sushi Jin Next Door locations in Silver Spring, Maryland and Woodbridge, Virginia.”

Not to be a party pooper but I’ve decided that at this point, I don’t care about any new places to eat until that Honey Pig that was supposed to open in DC appears….. (C’mon Honey Pig! Please break up the sushi and small plates monotony…)

That would be 3 places you can get sushi on that 1 block, right? Plus Maki Shop to go…
Seems a bit saturated, but ok. Not sure why these places don’t spread out – like when Dolcezza opened down the block from Pitango. Sigh…can we have Pitango back at least?

    • INWDC

Yeah, I don’t get it either, but maybe it actually fuels more business for places if they’re concentrated? I, too, lament Pitango’s departure but they are opening a new location (albeit a 15 minute walk away) in Adams Morgan.

The two other sushi places on that single block are very rarely ever crowded. I’m actually surprised that either of them are still around. A Korean place would be awesome, though.

To be fair the other two are Thai restaurants first and sushi second. And Baan Thai is one of the best Thai restaurants if not the best in the city.

Why can’t we just have a simple diner?

    • FridayGirl

Because the rents are too damn high.
(I kid. But I agree. Ted’s is too overcrowded, it would be nice to have an alternative.)

        There is always Commissary.

        • FridayGirl

This is true. I forget that’s over there!

      • JohnH

To be honest, Ted’s isn’t really crowded outside of breakfast/brunch. However, their dinner prices are a bit aggressive for the quality of food (although they do give you quantity…). Logan/Commissary are two examples of places that have done well for themselves with fairly normal prices. I think places tend to be on the smaller side on 14th, so they go for premium vs. quantity.
All this hype about The Smith – they are charging the same prices as NYC, which I find absurd. The Smith is more expensive than Le Diplomate – for both brunch and dinner!

I kind of like that this stretch of 14th street is becoming a bit of an ASEAN+3 food district. And I can’t even with the people who can’t find a restaurant they like in 14th/Logan — people that finicky will never be happy and it’s no use trying to appease them.

    • jaybird

Yep. Looking forward to the ramen shop.

Ugh, there is no room there for a sidewalk cafe. I know I am likely in the minority but this DC custom of taking up normal walking space for outside restaurant seating is just silly. Developers should create space for outside tables.

Im familiar with sushi jin when i use to live in silver spring and I have to admit it was one of my favorite go to spots. Excited to see what this new place has to offer

Can someone please open a sushi place or ramen in Petworth, Columbia Heights or 16th Street Heights. That makes 3 or 4 on 14th and P! There is a storefront for rent on 14th and Decatur.
