I had heard a lot of good stories about how awesome Big Bear is. And it is pretty damn awesome. If you live right near there you are indeed very lucky. It’s got great big windows and free wireless and nice food choices. I was excited to try the prosciutto and gruyere croissant but unfortunately they had run out. But I did have a very nice cucumber and hummous sandwich. Now, believe me, I wish Petworth had a Big Bear of its own. But in the meantime I think Columbia Heights Coffee is poised to take this mantle. Columbia Heights Coffee has it all as well, except it’s a little too small. So I hope with their upcoming expansion they will offer the same roomy atmosphere as Big Bear. After the jump see a photo of posters for a knitting club and book club held at Big Bear. (more…)

Don’t tell me coffee is temporary. I want my coffee to relax and listen to the birds chirp. Don’t make me think about achieving something on a Sunday morning when all I’m trying to do is get rid of my hangover. For the love of all that’s holy…

Whah? 14U which I always thought was called FourteenU Coffee shop, located at the corner of 14th and U, is actually called one for U coffee shop which I guess makes more sense. But anyway I just noticed that they now offer Salsa lessons which just seems really bizarre to me. It is a very small space, but I guess that’s cool. Maybe next month they’ll have free bonsai tree sculpting lessons. I mean that would make just as much sense, no? Has anyone taken the Salsa lessons? I’m still nursing a nagging breakdancing injury but I’ll have to check it out when I’ve recovered…

Here is a Caribou Coffee location that closed down in Adams Morgan. Has anyone ever seen a Caribou Coffee close before? Aren’t the independent stores supposed to be the ones that close? Not that I’m wishing for that. I just hope the corporation is going to be alright…

You see, not only is the coffee spectacular but Dunkin Donuts also has the best cups and certainly the most superior lids for any carry out coffee.
The genius behind the Dunkin Donuts lid is its locking mechanism which easily opens and closes for smooth drinking. I am still stunned that there is only one Dunkin Donuts serving the Petworth/Columbia Heights/U Street neighborhoods.

According to a commenter this Mocha Hut in 14th St. Heights will be reopening in two weeks.

After getting scolded for not visiting North Petworth, I decided to take a walk up to the Java & Cream coffee house located around 5500 Georgia Avenue. I am happy to report that it is a fantastic independently owned coffee house. I had the opportunity to briefly chat with the owner who told me he has plans to open 4 more in the area over the coming years. The coffee was delicious and cheaper than Starbucks. I paid $2.75 for a large latte. The owner also told me that in the future there will be some live music, which I’ll post when it happens. There is a great seating area here as well, so if you live in North Petworth enjoy this fantastic coffee shop. For those who live further south, there are plans to open another store near the Petworth Metro in about two years time.
A reader sent me in this wonderful experience at the recently opened D and D on 14th and Girard.
“Hi PoP: just wanted to let you know that, as a fellow fan of DD coffee, I was thrilled to know that DD had opened in the neighborhood, and I stopped by there today on my way home. I’d had a busy morning, and I’d forgotten that I didn’t have my wallet with me in my purse. The manager was behind the counter waiting for my order, and when I realized I didn’t have money on me, he told me not to worry about it and asked what I’d like to have! I’ll be headed back today to take him what I owe him. I wanted to let you know what a generous and smart (!) businessman is running the new Columbia Heights DD. Life is good.”
The fantastic blog Metrocurean reports that a wine bar will be opening up in the place of the coffee shop Sparky’s on 14th St. So, is this good news or bad news? What were your thoughts on Sparky’s? What the hell is a wine bar anyway? I’ve always been preferential to proper bars. Now, don’t get me wrong I’m siked for a wine store like D’vines to open but a wine bar…
